Some people believe that things are created by another being like a creator Ishvara, which is extremely absurd. What is the reason? Because the causes and conditions of things in the world are clearly seen and established separately, but they do not see these, and instead see the existence of a non-existent creator, such an idea is extremely ridiculous. Moreover, darkness in the world obstructs the clear seeing of forms and other things, but it never causes the seeing of non-existent things. You ignorant people, this darkness does not allow you to see the obvious proximate cause, the seed, and the cooperating conditions, water, fertilizer, temperature, humidity, the same season, etc., from which the fruit, sprout to harvest, etc., arise, which are all obvious. You do not see these, but instead believe in the existence of a creator that is neither obvious nor determined by subsequent inference, which is extremely despicable. This is a brief explanation of the reasoning for establishing the absence of self of a person, from the "Suchness" chapter of the Mahayana Sutra Ornament. This is the first part of Maitreya Bodhisattva's treatise. The second part comes from the "Bodhi Division Chapter," which explains the reasoning for establishing the absence of self of a person, divided into brief and detailed explanations. The first is explained in the form of a proposition. That is, the aggregates of body and mind of sentient beings are all contained within the five aggregates, namely the five from the form aggregate to the consciousness aggregate. Among them, the body is the form aggregate, having the nature of the five faculties such as the eye and the five objects such as form. The mind is the eight consciousnesses, and the feeling aggregate of the three feelings of pleasure, pain, and equanimity that arise around these consciousnesses, and the perception aggregate that has the function of perceiving "this is this," and the thoughts of desire, hatred, ignorance, etc., are the formation aggregate. Thus, the aggregates of body and mind are the five aggregates with the nature of many parts, and we observe this.

Therefore, the ego-grasping, is the grasping of the self of a person. It does not exist in the ultimate truth, let alone in the conventional reality. Thus, by revealing the absence of self of a person, the extreme of superimposition is eliminated. Then, is such a self of a person completely non-existent like a rabbit's horn? Although it is so in the ultimate truth, it is merely a nominal existence imputed by the mind's discrimination in the conventional sense. By saying this, the extreme of denial is avoided. The reason for this is that although the person who acts and experiences the results is without self-nature, there is a mental imputation of 'I' on the continuum of aggregates at the time of acting and experiencing the results. This is the self that serves as the basis for karma and its effects, and by merely acknowledging this, the denial of the conventional system of karma and its effects is avoided. Therefore, if you ask whether the self of a person exists or not, do not answer in one way, but answer by distinguishing: the self of a person is without self-nature, but it exists nominally. That is what should be said. Second, the detailed explanation. There are five points. First, the general refutation of the real existence of the self of a person is directed towards the non-Buddhist heretics and about five of the eighteen Hinayana schools within our own tradition, establishing the absence of self with these reasonings. That is, the self of a person does not exist, because no valid cognition can apprehend its existence. That is, from the fact that it is not seen by eye consciousness to the fact that it is not touched by body consciousness, the five sense consciousnesses, and even non-conceptual consciousness, cannot apprehend it. Moreover, the mind consciousness does not apprehend it in the form of clarity. Through the examination and analysis of the conceptual mind, it is not apprehended by inferential cognition as being like this. Because neither direct perception nor inference can apprehend it. To this, the former party says: The discriminating thought that grasps the self of a person apprehends the object of the self of a person. To this, the former party also has its own views. These five schools are the Dharma seen by the Bhagavan.
