There are also those who consider the function of doubt as the immediately preceding condition. If it is explained as having the function of opening up the arising of things and benefiting the result, then it is merely an admission of nomenclature. Merely opening up is not permissible, because it would be no different from saying that space is unobstructed. Furthermore, the identification of the immediately preceding condition [any previous moment of mind and mental factors, merely causing the mind of its respective external object to turn towards the object, is considered the immediately preceding condition. The main entity of the immediately preceding condition must also be identified in this way. Those who consider the immediately preceding consciousness as the immediately preceding condition, and those who believe that there is absolutely no consciousness in the case of cessation and unconscious attainment, for the consciousness at the time of rising from that attainment, the immediately preceding condition must be explained as the consciousness before entering the attainment having passed for a long time. For those who say this, there are endless logical obstacles. It has already been discussed earlier in the context of the Alaya consciousness. If the immediately preceding condition is explained according to the previous two methods, then even for appearances such as form that appear as external objects, there will be an immediately preceding condition, and as just mentioned, it must be admitted that it arises from three conditions. For all arising grasping consciousnesses, it is not certain that all four conditions are complete. For example, the eye consciousness that perceives two moons, its dominant condition is the eye sense, its substantial condition is the power of the Alaya's habitual tendencies, or it arises from the first moment of similar consciousness, and the immediately preceding condition is the attention that is considered to be directed towards the object. Although three conditions are complete, the objective condition is not complete, because the object, the two moons, does not exist, and it appears that way because it is a mistaken consciousness. Therefore, for arising grasping consciousnesses, there are many cases where the four conditions are not complete, and if it is only from the perspective of the possibility of completeness, then the classification of the four conditions is explained. When consciousness gives rise to consciousness, the four conditions are complete, and when consciousness gives rise to material appearances, it arises in a way that two conditions are complete, that is, the substantial condition is the habitual tendencies of the Alaya, and the co-

The cause of arising is, for example, like actions (འདུ་བྱེད།) throwing forth future births. When matter produces matter, two conditions must be complete. For those who consider the previous moment to be a similar immediate condition, that condition is also complete, so it arises from three conditions. Third, explaining the five fruits, the fruit of cessation does not have a cause that produces it, because it is a produced fruit. Cessation through individual examination is a real fruit of cessation, and it is also a conventional dharma. The cessation truth of ultimate reality is a real cessation, and a fruit that is imputed, because the imputation of fruit is placed on the ultimate realm itself, and the reason for establishing this is that the realm is inseparable from the nature body, so it is in the sense that the name of fruit can be applied to the nature body. Fruit is not real, because it is unreasonable to establish a real cause and effect relationship for the unconditioned. The dominant fruit is included by external objects, which is the case when it is not examined for the time being. In the case of accepting external objects, the container world and the objects of enjoyment, such as forms, sounds, smells, tastes, and tactile objects, are dominant fruits. In the case of a little examination, even if external objects are not accepted, the consciousness that appears as a place and the consciousness that appears as an object are established as dominant fruits. The fruit of maturation is included by the sentient being's continuum, belonging to the dharma of the body, namely the five aggregates taken by oneself, and the consciousness that appears there. The agent fruit is everything that arises from the perspective of the agent cause. The fruit of similarity is everything that arises from the cause of equality. These are also explained from the perspective of the main aspect, and are not absolutely certain. In general, all causes that produce things are necessarily included in two: the cause of complete defilement, the alaya consciousness, possessing all the habits of samsara; and the cause of complete purification, the stainless seeds. They are included in these two. The cause of complete defilement, the alaya consciousness, the seeds of samsara, habits, etc.
