And, it is not made by a permanent lord like the principal who has the three powers of dust, non-dust, and consciousness in equal proportions, nor is it produced from causes such as some non-Buddhists say that past, future, and present times are the cause of all the world, and some say that sounds and letters produce all the world, because it abandons the production of results from various different causes. Therefore, the Victorious One has well explained the various distinctions of cause, condition, and effect, and the many distinctions of dependent origination. Second, regarding the inner suchness, there are five famous points. The first point is: Like this, for those establishments of dependent origination, it is not made by the mind of the maker, nor is it produced from a permanent lord, etc., nor is it produced from different causes such as time, but various causes and conditions.

Therefore, it is born. The second point is how the three sufferings of affliction arise: From the mind of affliction, the actions of body and speech and the arising of external objects do not arise from it. Moreover, it must be that only one inner consciousness appears as the aspect of affliction, from which the consciousness of action arises, and from which the consciousness of birth arises. The third point is: external objects must exist, because these coarse objects are manifestly seen to be composed of minute atoms and so on. If you think so, then, from the appearance of many extremely small particles gathered together, the consciousness that appears as iron atoms arises, and from the consciousness of many of them gathered together, the consciousness that appears as water atoms arises, and from the consciousness of many of them gathered together, the consciousness that appears as rabbit atoms arises, and similarly, now actually becoming the object of eye consciousness, the consciousness of atoms gathered together, from which these coarse appearances arise. Moreover, even the dust of sunlight appears as the object of the root consciousness of each ordinary person. Therefore, it is true that coarse appearance arises from the consciousness appearing there. However, if the hair dust below that has not become the object of root consciousness does not appear to ordinary sentient beings, then how does coarse appearance arise from it? Even if those do not actually appear to the root consciousness of each ordinary person, it is not contradictory that later and later consciousness arises from them. Even if one does not see it with one's own eyes, in general, those are all consciousness, because for those with divine eyes, that and that appear. For example, the Thirty-three Heavens do not appear to the root consciousness of ordinary people, but to the root consciousness of those who have attained magical powers, they do appear. Therefore, in general, those must be established as mere consciousness, just like that. Furthermore, for the god-given, the various appearances of dreams seen in dreams, for the offering-given, are not clearly apparent, but in general, for the offering-given, they must also be established as mere dreams, just like that. In that way, although all consciousness is merely the luminosity of its own nature, however, if viewed in terms of individual persons, it should be divided into two: clear consciousness and unclear consciousness. The fourth point is: the external

Therefore, consciousness must necessarily exist. For example, eye consciousness must arise from the power of four conditions. If it is thought that the objective condition is the object of form, and the dominant condition is the eye faculty, these two are external objects, then, although these two also appear as external objects, they are not established as such. Because, the same consciousness appears as the knowing consciousness of the eye faculty, the knowing consciousness that appears as the objective condition of form, and the movement of the mind that wants to immediately move towards the objective condition, from the appearance of these three, the arising of eye consciousness and so on occurs. The fifth point is the way in which imputed knowing consciousness arises: Generally, time is only imputed by conceptual thought and does not exist as a substance. Because for each difference in the change of any dharma, it is labeled as past, future, present, etc. Therefore, from the mere discernment of the aspect of the arising of any object, the knowing consciousness of arising arises; from that, the knowing consciousness of abiding arises; from that, the knowing consciousness of ceasing arises; and from that, the knowing consciousness that appears as ceased arises. Although the same consciousness appears in the aspect of the three times, it is not a truly existing thing. Even so, some may think like this: Above, it has been established that all internal and external phenomena arise from the power of the alaya consciousness, and here it is said that from the knowing consciousness of the cause, the knowing consciousness of the result arises, are these two not contradictory? It is not so. For example, imagining a flame in front of oneself, from that knowing consciousness that appears as a flame, the knowing consciousness that appears as smoke arises, and that arises from the power of the alaya consciousness. Because the alaya consciousness has limitless habits of appearing as smoke, from which one habit is nourished, and thus the appearance of smoke arises. Moreover, the appearance of smoke also sows new habits of smoke on the alaya again, and also nourishes the old habits of smoke that are close to ripening, thus the knowing consciousness of smoke, or other knowing consciousnesses, etc., arise. Therefore, fully nourishing the seeds on the alaya also causes knowing consciousness to appear, and the appearance of knowing consciousness also sows new seeds.
