It is not generated from others, nor accumulated by being instigated by them. Virtues are entirely without attachment, without hatred, and without ignorance, because they must arise from these three absences. Thus, the ignorance towards the self that arises within the realm of consciousness has an attachment to the self as its companion. Through its power, a desire for one's own well-being arises, but this alone is not considered unwholesome. Driven by the desire for one's own well-being, with the intention of being happy and joyful in future lives, one generates the three roots of virtue, and motivated by this, one engages in virtuous actions such as upholding moral discipline. Therefore, such actions, although instigated by the three roots at the time, are motivated by ignorance at the causal stage. Due to its blessing, this action is an action associated with ignorance, and the desire for one's own well-being that it instigates, as well as the three roots, are also called limbs of ignorance. Some identify ignorance as the view of the aggregates as a real self, but this is merely mentioning the aspect of clarity. If it were identified as the basis of ignorance itself, then the classification of the ten afflictions taught by the Bhagavan would be incomplete, because the view of the aggregates as a real self and ignorance are the same. Similarly, the number of the six root afflictions would also be incomplete, leading to the fault of being excessive. Thus, the view of the aggregates as a real self is related to ignorance, and because it is very clear, it is mentioned from the aspect of clarity. The second limb, formation, is threefold: meritorious action, non-meritorious action, and unwavering action. The first is the virtuous actions of the desire realm, the second is the non-virtuous actions of the desire realm, and the third is the action that accomplishes the two upper realms. The reason for designating it as unwavering is that the ripening of the action does not move elsewhere, hence it is called that. This action itself is meditative concentration, and when it is cast into the two upper realms, due to the power of conditions, it goes to intermediate existences and so on, to beings of the same kind.

Not being reborn into different castes, etc., but like being abandoned, not being devoured by demons, but being directly reborn. If one is abandoned by the karma of merit and non-merit, then in the intermediate state, one will be completely transformed by conditions and reborn into other beings of the same or different kinds. The third limb is consciousness. On top of the Alaya consciousness, the habits of karma are completely placed, and that consciousness itself is the part that is completely transformed. That is also divided into the consciousness of the causal time and the consciousness of the resultant time. The fourth limb, name and form, name refers to the four aggregates, which are the latter four aggregates such as feeling. The reason why they are established as the four aggregates of name is that the aggregate of form is the object of the five sense consciousnesses, and it is manifest, so there is no need to rely on name to know it. The latter four aggregates exist in the continuum of others, so they must be known by relying on name. For example, if a person has a feeling of pleasure, pain, or indifference in his continuum, others cannot directly know it, but must rely on the language of "such a feeling of pleasure, pain, or indifference has arisen" to know it. Therefore, this limb of name and form manifests when the Alaya consciousness takes rebirth in the womb, enters the middle of the parents' sperm and blood, and is the mass of the union of the two, although the six senses are not complete, it is the nature of the aggregation of form, sound, smell, taste, and touch, and is the resultant form composed of the elements, so it is the aggregate of form. The three aggregates of feeling, perception, and volition are that part of the five omnipresent ones that are the wheel of the Alaya consciousness, and the aggregate of consciousness is the Alaya consciousness itself. In these stages of name and form, there is no mental consciousness. For mental consciousness to arise, one must first have the mental faculty, and before that, the five sense consciousnesses must arise first, because as it is said, "The sixth that has just ceased, whatever consciousness is called mind." Like this, because the six sense bases have not arisen, the five sense consciousnesses will not arise.
