These three, namely the practical dependent origination and so on, were also taught by the Blessed One to the three types of disciples in order. As it was said, they also mainly realized that and that. The dependent origination of distinguishing self-nature is: all external and internal phenomena arise from the alaya-consciousness, and appearances are established there by its power. This is what the Blessed One taught as an instruction for bodhisattvas who have entered the Mahayana, and it was not taught to the other two types of beings. Therefore, only bodhisattvas and Buddhas can realize it, but it is not reasonable for shravakas and pratyekabuddhas to realize even a little bit. The second is the twelve links of dependent origination. The Blessed One taught it to both types of beings, shravakas and pratyekabuddhas, and as it was taught, both are practitioners. However, pratyekabuddhas realize the dependent origination of arising and ceasing in detail, while shravakas do not realize dependent origination so deeply through their own mastery as pratyekabuddhas do. The third, the practical dependent origination, is mainly practiced and realized by shravakas. The meaning of the dependent origination of distinguishing self-nature is that distinguishing means, in this context, growth and expansion. Therefore, various appearances such as form, sound, smell, taste, and touch, and untrue conceptualizations of mind and mental factors, leave imprints on the alaya-consciousness, and make the alaya-consciousness itself grow and expand. Moreover, the alaya-consciousness, by the power of imprints, makes various appearances and conceptualizations grow and expand, so these two are mutually cause and effect, and their meaning is consistent, so it is called self-nature. Distinguishing between the beautiful and the ugly also means distinguishing, as mentioned above, growth and expansion. Beautiful is pleasing, and ugly is displeasing. There are also two types: from the perspective of all afflictions, and from the perspective of purification. The first is: meritorious virtue with outflows corresponding to ignorance.

Through the power of..., being born in the higher realms is the dependent arising of distinguishing suffering, and through the power of non-virtuous actions associated with ignorance, being born in the three lower realms is called the dependent arising of distinguishing unpleasantness. Secondly, through the power of virtuous and non-virtuous actions associated with ignorance, being born in the six realms is the distinguishing of unpleasantness, and obtaining liberation through the power of uncontaminated virtue is called the dependent arising of distinguishing suffering. It is also called the dependent arising of appropriation, which is the way the six aggregates of consciousness arise and cease, and that is also, the one who closely experiences is feeling, and the one who closely examines is contact, and whatever object possesses such qualities is called appropriation. For example, an attractive object is the objective condition, the eye faculty is the dominant condition, the causal condition is the first moment of eye consciousness, and the attention that desires to turn towards the object is the immediately preceding condition. Thus, from the power of the four complete conditions, eye consciousness arises, and the complete examination of the object's form by eye consciousness is contact, and the experience of the attractive aspect of the object by consciousness is the feeling of pleasure, which is the gateway to the arising of desire, and the thought of not wanting to be separated from the attractive object. Thus, when eye consciousness arises from the four conditions, the mental events that arise around it, such as contact, feeling, and thought, cause the primary nature of the mind to become confused and impure. That is the gateway to the arising of hatred based on an unpleasant object, and the gateway to the arising of delusion based on a neutral object, and so forth, should also be understood by analogy. In general, from the first moment of consciousness and the first moment of mental events that arise around it, the second moment of consciousness and the second moment of mental events that arise around it arise. The way they arise is that the first moment of consciousness acts as the immediately preceding cause of the second moment of consciousness, and the mental events that arise in the first moment act as the accompanying condition of the second moment of consciousness. The first moment of consciousness
