Although the object of focus for generating Bodhicitta is not necessarily singular, the difference between properly focusing on that single object and not doing so leads to the arising of this or that (different results). By relying on obtaining such a distinction in the object of focus, one tames one's own continuum, which is like thick skin, through the Samadhi of Tranquility (Shamatha), making it without wavering or crookedness. Just as an arrow is straightened, one straightens the arrow of eternalism and nihilism in one's own continuum, guiding it straight into the Middle Way. One cultivates the Samadhi of Insight (Vipassana). Furthermore, since Tranquility is common, one relies on Tranquility that possesses the meaning of selflessness, and on Insight that is uncommon and possesses single-pointedness of mind, thereby sequentially attaining the complete liberation of mind and the complete liberation of wisdom. Moreover, since the mind, which is the Alaya-vijnana (store consciousness), appears as the duality of grasper and grasped, afflictions such as attachment and actions (karma) arise, leading to involvement in Samsara. Since the mind appears as the duality of grasper and grasped, the stages of the path, such as faith, also arise. Therefore, since all paths arise from the appearance of the duality of grasper and grasped, one must destroy the duality of grasper and grasped, as illustrated by the examples of sin and woodworm. Just as all the completely afflicted phenomena are without truth, so too are the phenomena of virtuous Dharma paths without truth. The mind is that which possesses various appearances, and it also enters into various appearances. Thus, all phenomena encompassed by complete affliction and complete purification through the path are merely appearances of assembled causes and conditions in conventional truth, but they are not truly existent in their own nature. Third, the summary of the meaning: From the appearance of the duality of grasper and grasped and from the conceptual thoughts of afflictions, actions (karma) and suffering arise, and the appearance of actions and suffering also leaves imprints on the Alaya-vijnana, thus becoming the cause for the future arising of the appearance of body and suffering, and so on, occurring continuously. Through the conceptual thoughts of virtuous Dharma, that is, the sequence of hearing, contemplating, and meditating, one traverses the two paths of accumulation and preparation, and from this arises the non-conceptual wisdom of the path of seeing, which destroys the seeds of the appearance of the duality of grasper and grasped, (thereby reaching) the realm.

Ignorance, karma, and afflictions, which gather the three realms of samsara, will be averted. Then, relying on the gradual progression of the ten bhumis, even the subtle sufferings gathered by pure appearance will be completely abandoned, and the non-abiding nirvana will be attained. After that, the way to avert samsara by the Hinayana path in an incidental way is: by meditating on the inferior path, the seeds of the dualistic appearance of grasping and being grasped become thin, thereby averting ignorance. By the power of abandoning it, it is only the separation from the agent and object of karma and suffering. It is only that the path is distinguished in a short period of time such as three lifetimes and hundreds of kalpas. Therefore, the appearance of those is not completely stopped. The way of entering and averting samsara is what needs to be understood now. This teaching of the eight consciousnesses also opens the door to the ultimate renunciation. That is, merely being disgusted with the suffering of this life is not renunciation. Moreover, being disgusted with the suffering of the three lower realms is only a part of renunciation. Turning away from all samsara is the common renunciation of the Hinayana and Mahayana. On top of that, the nature of this three-realm samsara is primordially non-existent and free from elaboration. However, wanting to definitely emerge from this samsara, which is merely an appearance of conventional causes and conditions, is the ultimate renunciation of the Mahayana. And, if one knows that these appearances of the eight consciousnesses are momentary, impermanent, and untrue, then it will also become the gateway to the selflessness of the person. And knowing that the alaya consciousness and the seven active consciousnesses arise from the cause and effect of each other, then one will fully know that these are merely the appearances of dependent origination of consciousness, therefore it is also the gateway to the selflessness of phenomena. Thus, the explanation of the fourth chapter on establishing the proof of the eight consciousnesses is finished. The fifth chapter is: First, the five dharmas, which are the basis of what is to be expressed, are taught. Then, the three characteristics of what is to be expressed from them are explained. And the dependent origination derived from other-powered nature is explained. And the establishment of the causes and conditions derived from dependent origination, in four parts. The first part is to identify the nature of the five dharmas, namely reason and name.
