Moreover, in general, merely the ālaya is the source of all abodes, bodies, and enjoyments of sentient beings, and is merely its appearance. Therefore, it is established that it pervades all of these. In detail, the various appearances of the three lineages of beings (སྐྱེས་བུ་ལྷ་གསུམ།) are completely emanated from the ālaya, and because of its power, they are merely appearances. Therefore, the nature of the ālaya possesses these modes of transformation. The object of the ālaya is the ālaya itself, and all the fruits mentioned above, as objects in an indistinct manner. The way of entering is that in the ālaya, all phenomena of samsara and nirvana exist in the form of potency or seeds. The way of entering by division is considered to be in two parts: seeds and fully ripened results, as mentioned above. Furthermore, the ālaya is also the common lord cause and lord condition of all entering consciousnesses. The uncommon lord cause of each individual is, in this context of the Mahayana, not considered to be the five faculties as being of the nature of subtle particles, but rather the habitual tendencies of the consciousnesses that appear as the eye faculty up to the consciousnesses that appear as the body faculty. Wisdom is considered to be the lord condition of the afflicted mind. The objects of these are the five objects from the consciousness that appears as form to the consciousness that appears as touch, which are the objective conditions of the five sense consciousnesses. The objective condition of the mind consciousness is the past and the future, because they have no substance, so there is actually no object. Therefore, the consciousness that appears as the three times and the consciousness that appears as phenomena born from the source of phenomena. The lord condition of the afflicted mind is the ālaya consciousness. The immediate condition of these is the attention that makes their respective objects manifest and directs them. The others are easy to understand. The immediate condition of the afflicted mind is the attention that directs the object to the ālaya, which is the attention that arises as part of the retinue of the afflicted mind. Most Abhidharma schools consider that the first moment of each consciousness of the same kind that has just passed is the immediate condition of the second moment. However, our own system is that, in general, it is not certain that all consciousnesses have their first moment that has just passed as the immediate condition.

Some do it that way too. In that case, it becomes the cause and condition for the second moment of consciousness. For example, for the duration of just a cup of tea, the eyes are fixed on a blue flower, and only remain on the eye consciousness that holds the blue. To the average person, it seems that there is no interruption of other consciousnesses, so it seems to be continuously produced, and therefore mistakenly thinks that a single blue-appearing eye consciousness is produced. But this is not the case, there are many moments of blue-appearing eye consciousness in it. Among them, there may be cases where the second moment is produced from the first moment, and the third moment is produced from the second moment, and so on. But in most cases, a single moment of blue-appearing eye consciousness is produced from the Alaya consciousness, and then it disappears. Again, from the Alaya consciousness and that which it possesses is the unreal parikalpita. For example, the consciousness of the desire realm is of the nature of thought and examination, and the preliminary stage and the actual state of the first dhyana are similar to it. The special actual state of the first dhyana, although it has abandoned thought, still possesses examination. Therefore, all consciousnesses below it can be considered as false parikalpita. However, from the second dhyana to the peak of existence, the causal samadhi and the formless dhyanas that produce the result, whichever they may be, are consciousnesses without thought and examination. If it is thought that they are not unreal parikalpita, that is not correct. Because all that is included in mind and mental factors, and the three realms, are unreal, it is said that they are parikalpita. So, what is the difference between mind and mental factors? Merely knowing the nature of the object is consciousness, and fully knowing the differences of the object are the mental factors that arise as the retinue of that consciousness. For example, when the eye and form come together and eye consciousness arises, the eye consciousness merely knows the nature of the appearance of that form. The differences of the form, such as good or bad, large or small, are known by the mental factors that arise as the retinue of the eye consciousness. Furthermore, among the eight consciousness aggregates, only the Alaya consciousness is the consciousness of the aspect of condition, and the other seven active consciousnesses are consciousnesses with the nature of enjoyment.
