I have explained the profound Ālayavijñāna to the noble Bodhisattvas. This was mainly spoken for the disciples who are Bodhisattvas. The reason why it is not mainly spoken for the Śrāvakas is that they only seek their own liberation and do not mainly practice benefiting others. Therefore, for some children with very dull wisdom, the Ālayavijñāna is all-pervasive of all knowable things and flows like a river without ever ceasing. The Ālayavijñāna has existed since beginningless time and is the agent of abandoning the body, taking rebirth, and abiding in the three states. They might mistakenly think that this is a personal self. Therefore, considering that it is not appropriate to do so, this Dharma was not taught to those who do not have the capacity for the Mahāyāna and are destined to be Śrāvakas. That is to say, for the disciples of the Śrāvakas, etc., it is only necessary to teach the Dharma of the absence of a personal self. If this is taught, they will use it as a basis for misunderstanding, thereby giving rise to the clinging to a personal self. The Ālayavijñāna and the seven evolving consciousnesses become causes and effects to each other, and by relying on the two graspings, habits are left behind. As mentioned above, this leads to Saṃsāra. The basis for this is "The Tathāgatagarbha is..." etc. The Tathāgatagarbha in this case refers to the Ālayavijñāna being indicated by that name. For example, when a person throws a thread from a garment onto something else, people say that the person threw the thread. Similarly, the Ālayavijñāna is similar to a person in the Tathāgatagarbha, and the Ālayavijñāna is similar to the outer garment. In reality, when the Ālayavijñāna and the seven evolving consciousnesses operate together, it also indicates joining the Tathāgatagarbha. Therefore, the Ālayavijñāna, which possesses the seven evolving consciousnesses, completely leaves behind the habits of the grasper and the grasped in a way that they become causes and effects to each other, thereby continuously entering Saṃsāra. What makes the ground turbid are the seven consciousnesses, mainly the afflicted mind. Therefore, the afflicted mind with the six consciousnesses always constantly plants habits, and the afflicted mind

The habits arising from the entering consciousnesses that are the main ones are like impurities residing in the sky. The ālaya-vijñāna, which is like the moon, and the entering consciousnesses, which are like stars, together with their accompanying mental factors, abide in karma like the sky. It is said that these external forms, sounds, smells, tastes, tactile objects, and so on, are not established in reality, but are merely appearances of the habits of the ālaya-vijñāna. As the Sutra school believes, for example, the object of the appearance of eye consciousness is blue, and the eye consciousness itself is the appearance of blue. Even though the sprout is the cause of the present, it is not a continuation of the same kind. Therefore, one cannot say that the present sprout is the merit of the past sprout. Therefore, the habits of forms, sounds, etc., such as the ālaya-vijñāna, exist in the form of seeds, and when they ripen, forms, sounds, etc. It is shown that the eighteen schools of the Śrāvakayāna are all famous sutras. Previously, one sutra evolved into one hundred sutras, but later there were only about ten sutras evolved from one. In the context of its four-line verse, it says: "A person likes the ālaya-vijñāna, is very happy with the ālaya-vijñāna, is extremely happy, and is completely happy. Because of abandoning it, if the Dharma is preached, they will listen and pay attention; practicing the Dharma, when the Tathāgata appears in the world, an inconceivable and wonderful Dharma will also appear." Although it is shown by the name of the ālaya-vijñāna, the Śrāvakayāna schools do not accept the ālaya-vijñāna, so they also distort the meaning of that sutra. The Bhikṣu Myo-gyang of the Vaibhāṣika school believes that it is only the continuation of the five aggregates; Bhikṣu Sheng-you believes that it is the view of the assembly of fears; Bhikṣu Miu-gong of the Sutra school believes that it is the aggregate of feelings; in the scriptures of the Mahāsāṃghika school, it is said that the ālaya-vijñāna is the root consciousness. Moreover, the ālaya-vijñāna itself is all consciousnesses. It is established by the scriptural authority of the Mind Commentary. Similarly, the nature of the ālaya-vijñāna is also bliss and emptiness. There are two kinds of actual teachings. The first is: Because it is established that there is a place for habits to be placed, it is established that the ālaya-vijñāna exists. If one believes that there is a place for habits to be placed other than the ālaya-vijñāna, then there is no reason at all. For those who do not accept the ālaya-vijñāna.

There are many logical obstacles, and there are countless logical proofs for the existence of the ālaya-vijñāna. Those should be explained. Secondly, it is impossible for afflictions such as desire to arise in individual beings, because the ālaya-vijñāna, which is the place of seeds, does not exist. If you think that without the place of seeds, you can sow the seeds of perception of inanimate objects such as desire, then it would be too much. Such perception is impossible in knowable objects, and if it is possible, according to your view, it is impossible to have a basis for imprinting habits in the formless realm. Because you think that the sense faculties with form are not in the formless realm. The six aggregates cannot be the basis for imprinting habits, which has already been refuted above. If there is no ālaya-vijñāna, then it is not reasonable for a womb-born being to be conceived in the womb. Consciousness completely enters the sperm and blood of the parents, and for a month it is in the state of a slimy substance, preventing the two and space, etc. from being objects, because the consciousness at the time of the slimy substance cannot perceive them. The definition of mental consciousness is also incomplete. The second point is established, because at that time the causes and conditions for the arising of mental consciousness are also incomplete. If there is ālaya-vijñāna, then it is reasonable for mental consciousness to arise with it as the cause and condition, but because you do not admit ālaya-vijñāna, the causes and conditions are incomplete. Because it does not exist, there is no afflicted mind, so the dominant condition is also incomplete. In this regard, the Vaibhāṣika and other schools say: Cessation and rebirth, freedom from desire, decay and death, and transmigration are all considered to be mental consciousness. Therefore, they also consider the consciousness at the time of conception in the womb to be mental consciousness. In states such as fainting, consciousness will not exist, because due to causes such as illness and demonic influences, one will faint and become unconscious. And the cessation meditation and the non-conceptual meditation, these two meditations, and in the state of deep sleep, is there consciousness or not? If there is consciousness, then the existence of ālaya-vijñāna is established, because in that state, the five sense consciousnesses do not exist, because there is no seeing or hearing, etc., which is established by direct perception. Mental consciousness also does not exist, because there is no movement of any conceptual thought.
