Although it is established as an experience, it is not as coarse as that. Rather, based on the aspect of the ālaya becoming a consciousness that encounters an object, a subtle aspect of experience arises, which is feeling. Attention is directing the mind towards the appearance of an object. Recollection is thinking, "I have seen something like this before," and recollecting future objects, etc., which occur in all three times. The attention that becomes a retinue of the ālaya is the ālaya itself merely attending to the appearance of an object. Conception is when consciousness itself, after encountering an object, apprehends it as "this" and "that," holding it to be so even without coarse characteristics. Volition is It is like a river, flowing continuously as long as time revolves. The cessation of the ālaya is said to occur when one attains the fruit of an Arhat. Moreover, it is a Mahāyāna Arhat. A consciousness called afflicted mind (klesha-manas) has the ālaya as its objective condition. More precisely, when a consciousness born from the ālaya focuses on the ālaya itself, it is like mistaking a tree stump for a person in the night. Although in reality, "I" (Sanskrit: aham, Romanized Sanskrit: ahaṃ, literal meaning: I) is without self, there is a consciousness that appears as "I," which is established as afflicted mind. Since this is a non-conceptual, deluded consciousness, there is no grasping of "I." However, through its power, the view of the transitory collection (satkāya-dṛṣṭi) and others arise. Such an afflicted mind is not taught in the obscure scriptures. The distinctions of companions are four uncommon and five common, totaling nine that are practiced together. First, the four uncommon ones are: view of self, ignorance of self, pride of self, and conception of self. It is always accompanied by these four afflictions. The order in which they arise is that ignorance of self arises first, because view of self and others arise from the root of ignorance that does not know the non-existence of self. Therefore, ignorance of self arises first. This is the aspect of the affliction of ignorance. View of self is thinking and grasping "I" as self, so it is an affliction of wrong view. Pride of self is when self appears, thinking of oneself as superior or slightly superior, but

Even without the coarse pride of considering oneself superior due to lineage, learning, etc., but merely maintaining a haughty attitude, this is afflictive pride. The consciousness of having a self, although called consciousness due to combination, is actually attachment to the self. Even if it is not intense craving, the unwillingness to abandon the self and the thought that the self is pleasing is the manifestation of attachment. Contact, etc. The afflictive mind and its nine attendants in the continuum of sentient beings born in the desire realm are categorized under the desire realm ground, and are also mixed with other types. The boundaries are: When a Hearer, Solitary Realizer Arhat, and one who has attained the wisdom of the Noble Path, the afflictive mind is roughly established. In detail, generally, the seed is abandoned, and there is the boundary of not abandoning the manifestation; the boundary of abandoning the manifestation but not abandoning the seed; the boundary of abandoning both; and the boundary of not abandoning both. There are four situations. The first situation is: Not having cultivated the path to enlightenment for countless eons, but having become accustomed to the path in a short period of time such as three lifetimes, thereby abandoning the seed of self-grasping with the fruit of Arhatship, but not abandoning the manifestation, existing in a state of abandonment and non-abandonment. For example, in the past, when taming elephants, many Arhats were frightened and ran away, etc. This occurred because they were Arhats, and although they had abandoned the seed of self-grasping, due to past habits, there was still a mere appearance of self. The second situation is: Temporarily abandoning the manifestation of afflictions and conceptual thoughts, etc., with the worldly path, but being unable to abandon the seed. The third and fourth situations are easy to understand. Until the attainment of the eighth Bhumi of the Great Vehicle, although there is only the lineage of the afflictive mind, when the eighth Bhumi is attained, it is abandoned from the root. When the two Arhats of the Lesser Vehicle are attained, there is also no characteristic of the afflictive mind. Similarly, when abiding in the cessation meditation, there is also no afflictive mind. Cessation meditation is the samadhi attained by the two Arhats of the Lesser Vehicle and the attainment of the Noble Path of the Great Vehicle. Even if it is not these, one also attains the ground of the non-returner who has realized cessation with the body.
