Laziness is a fault during the practice of meditative stabilization. Forgetting the key instructions is a fault when striving in meditative stabilization. Excitement and dullness are faults during equipoise. Not applying antidotes when excitement and dullness arise is a fault. Excessive effort when excitement and dullness subside is a fault. The eight applications to abandon these are: the antidote to laziness is the place and abiding in it, the cause and the result. As it is said, desiring the place, and the effort of abiding in it, the cause of desire is trusting faith, and the result of effort is pliancy. The antidote to forgetfulness is mindfulness. The antidote to excitement and dullness is vigilance. The antidote to not applying antidotes when excitement and dullness arise is to apply antidotes. The antidote to excessive effort is equanimity, which is to let the mind rest in its natural state. Furthermore, when enjoying food in order to sustain the body, if it is too little, the body will become emaciated due to hunger and thirst, making it unbearable to engage in virtue; if it is too much, it will cause discomfort in breathing and generate indigestion and other illnesses. Therefore, using only what benefits digestion and sustains the body is knowing the measure of food. It is good not to sleep during the first and last parts of the night. Diligently practicing the yoga of purifying obscurations such as loving-kindness and compassion. Mindfulness that does not forget what to adopt and abandon. Examining one's own actions of body, speech, and mind, practicing what is appropriate and abandoning what is not, abiding in vigilance. At that time, remembering the benefits of virtue with conscientiousness and gladly accepting them, remembering the faults of non-virtue and abandoning them, and so forth, engaging only in virtue. From practicing these, a beginner will attain the path of accumulation, the ground of faith. Secondly, the definition is: whatever virtue in the continuum of a bodhisattva beginner that is in accordance with the part of liberation, and becomes the entrance to liberation, is the definition of the path of accumulation. The ground of a beginner, the ground of faith, corresponding to the part of liberation, the path of accumulation, etc., are synonyms. Thirdly, the divisions are: the great vehicle's path of accumulation, small, medium, and large. Small refers to entering the beginning of the three countless eons, which are the cause of attaining Buddhahood. The time of meditating on the four close placements of mindfulness. The time when the path of joining arises is uncertain.

The medium is, at the time of cultivating the four right abandonments, the joining path will definitely arise in the next life. The great is, at the time of cultivating the four miraculous legs, the joining path will definitely arise in this very life. Furthermore, the objects of the four mindfulnesses are the internal and external body, contaminated feelings, the mind of consciousness, and the phenomena of samsara and nirvana; the aspects are, in order, contemplating the impurity of the body, contemplating suffering, contemplating impermanence, and contemplating the equality of all phenomena as selfless; the essence is, the wisdom that knows the reality of the body and so on as it is, is called mindfulness, therefore it is the memory that does not forget the meaning realized by wisdom. The objects of the four right abandonments are virtue and non-virtue; the aspects are cultivating to generate ungenerated virtuous dharmas, to maintain generated ones, to not generate ungenerated non-virtuous dharmas, and to abandon generated ones. The essence is, the diligence of taking and abandoning after knowing what should be abandoned and what should be cultivated. The objects of the four miraculous legs are, the activities accomplished by familiarizing oneself with samadhi, such as transformation. The essence is, the samadhi in which the mind remains one-pointedly due to diligent effort, it is the place or cause for accomplishing clairvoyance and so on, therefore it is the miraculous leg itself. There are four of these: The samadhi of aspiration is, relying on respectfully applying with strong desire, thereby causing the mind to remain one-pointedly; the samadhi of diligence is, relying on constantly and continuously applying, thereby causing the mind to remain one-pointedly; the samadhi of mind is, relying on the growth of the seed of cultivating samadhi in previous lives, thereby causing the mind to remain one-pointedly; the samadhi of investigation is, relying on relying on virtuous friends, with wisdom thoroughly distinguishing the reality of dharmas, thereby causing the mind to remain one-pointedly. The fourth is the benefit. In the Ornament of the Sutras it says: Thereafter, that bodhisattva, before obtaining the ground of pure superior intention, will obtain five benefits, therefore he will become a completely pure and unsurpassed vessel.
