The two are the cause of faults that arise. Why is wisdom the main cause? In Vasubandhu's Treasury of Knowledge, it says: "Without skillful discrimination of all dharmas, one cannot pacify all afflictions." Also, in the Guide to the Bodhisattva's Way of Life, it says: "Therefore, the scriptures say that apart from this path, there is no other way to generate enlightenment." There are many such scriptures. If one thinks that this contradicts the three causes of unsurpassed enlightenment spoken of by the noble Nagarjuna, it is not contradictory. The term "bodhicitta" refers to the basis of classification; the wisdom that does not rely on compassion and the two refers to the classification of conventional and ultimate bodhicitta, which can be understood through the above-mentioned content. Third, the nine stains that obscure the tathagatagarbha and are to be abandoned on the path are: the seed of desire, the seed of hatred, and the seed of ignorance or habitual tendencies, which are three when counted individually; the strong arising of the three manifest afflictions of desire, hatred, and ignorance; the ground of ignorance habitual tendencies present in the continuum of the shravaka and pratyekabuddha arhats; the stains of the Mahayana path of seeing to be abandoned present in the continuum of ordinary beings who are still learning; the stains of the path of meditation to be abandoned present in the continuum of noble beings who are still learning; the unfavorable conditions from the first to the seventh bhumis, that is, the appearance of non-elaboration based on the seven impure bhumis, and the appearance of non-elaboration of great compassion, as well as the system of the twelve links of dependent origination. Furthermore, the mind-made body of self-nature, obscured by the ground of ignorance habitual tendencies and uncontaminated karma, can effortlessly and spontaneously accomplish the benefit of sentient beings without relying on it. This is a unique characteristic of the Buddha alone, and therefore it is said to be destroyed by the wisdom of the Tathagata. It should be understood that this does not mean directly abandoning it as the uninterrupted path in the first moment of obtaining omniscience. The antidote to be abandoned based on the seven impure bhumis is the wisdom that directly realizes emptiness in the continuum of the pure bhumis. The stains based on the three pure bhumis are the vajra-like samadhi of the path of meditation, that is, the direct realization of emptiness in the continuum of the pure bhumis.

It should be destroyed by wisdom. Therefore, for these nine stains, one must generate diligence to practice the antidotal paths. Renunciation, great compassion, dependent origination, and tranquility are, in order, the antidotes to the four, such as attachment. The wisdom of directly realizing selflessness is the antidote to the middle three, and the wisdom of directly realizing emptiness is the antidote to the last two, as mentioned above, one should know how to combine them. Although the explanation of the Uttaratantra and the identification of the antidotes mentioned here are slightly different, they ultimately converge on the same meaning, and should not be regarded as contradictory like hot and cold. Fifth, the four methods of purifying adventitious stains, such as faith, etc., are explained, divided into general meaning and textual meaning. First, in the general meaning, it includes identifying the basis for purifying stains, showing the nine similes that represent the Tathagatagarbha, dividing these similes into the three dharmas to be represented, and explaining the meanings of these divisions separately. The first is that, from the very beginning, all elaborations

The nature of that is threefold: the self-arisen wisdom dharmakāya, the unchanging suchness, and the lineage for attaining Buddhahood, these are the three. Fourth, explaining the meaning of these divisions separately, there are three points: showing the metaphorical meaning of the dharmakāya, showing the metaphorical meaning of suchness, and explaining the metaphorical meaning of the lineage. First, the metaphorical meaning of the dharmakāya has two aspects: explaining the divisions of the dharmakāya, and combining these with metaphors. First, if we divide the dharmakāya, there are two: the essence, naturally pure and luminous, which is the object of the self-cognizant wisdom of the Buddhas, this is the realization dharmakāya; and the collections of names, words, and letters that appear in the minds of noble ones and ordinary beings as general sounds, which are the teachings, the teaching dharmakāya. The first is the defining characteristic of the dharmakāya, and the second is the imputed one. If we divide the teaching dharmakāya, there are two: the definitive sūtras that teach the profound ultimate truth, and the provisional sūtras that teach the various aspects of conventional reality, such as the aggregates and elements. If we separate the real and imputed dharmakāya, there is one realization dharmakāya and two teaching dharmakāyas, making three in total. Second, combining these with metaphors: the realization dharmakāya, whose essence is naturally pure and adorned with all qualities, is shown to be similar in nature to the body of the Buddha adorned with marks and signs, residing within a lotus; the definitive sūtras that teach the profound meaning, teaching that all phenomena are of one taste in suchness, are shown to be similar to the one sweet taste of honey; and the provisional sūtras that teach the various aspects of conventional reality, spoken in accordance with the minds of various beings to be tamed in order to realize the tathāgatagarbha, are shown to be similar in nature to the essence of edible fruit residing within various husks. Second, the metaphorical meaning of suchness: although the nature of the mind is associated with afflictions and so on, its own essence is naturally pure and luminous, and it does not change into other forms, therefore it is called suchness. It is like the color of gold residing within impurity.
