It is the knowledge that conforms to the means of accomplishing things, and when the profound Middle Way path arises in one's own mind, one needs to know the differences between existence and non-existence, etc. Therefore, one must be skilled in eliminating the two extremes of existence and non-existence, permanence and annihilation, etc. In order to know the difference between existence and non-existence, one must know the characteristics of all phenomena, such as their own and common characteristics. Every phenomenon has two characteristics: its own characteristic, such as the characteristic of fire being hot and burning; and its common characteristic, such as the characteristic of fire being able to perform a function, especially impermanence, emptiness, and selflessness. If the former is a characteristic, then it must be a characterized object, but the latter is not pervasive. Furthermore, like the convention of applying the name "cow" to a white cow based on the reason that it is different from a collection of horns and other aggregates, one should also understand the way of applying conventions to other phenomena such as vases. One must also know the characteristics of cause and effect of conditioned phenomena, that is, the characteristic of a generating cause, or the characteristic of a benefiting cause. If it is a conditioned phenomenon, then it must be a cause, because a conditioned phenomenon must possess one of the above two characteristics. The characteristic of a generated effect, or the characteristic of a benefiting effect. If it is an object, then it must be an effect, because an object must possess one of the above two characteristics. Thus, in order to understand how each characteristic represents its respective characterized phenomena, and how each name or convention represents its respective meaning, etc., only the names of these are mentioned here. Secondly, when explaining the classification of differences such as existence and non-existence, there are two parts. First, there are also three types of existence: ultimate truth, sign, and present existence. These are the classifications of existence, so there are three types. Like the wisdom of suchness of the nature of reality, it exists ultimately; convention and sign exist only as designated by name; and present phenomena, such as conditioned phenomena, exist without ceasing after being born. The so-called sign is based on the name, knowing what the meaning of this name is, and not being confused; convention is about the meaning.

Relying on this, the name of this thing is this, just like a name will not be confused. For example, the name is a vase, and the meaning is a bloated belly, and so on. Secondly, non-existence can be divided into six types: the cause of production exists, but it has not yet arisen, which is the future, or like when clay exists, there is no pottery vase; the past that has ceased after arising; or like a pottery vase being smashed by a hammer and disappearing; like a horse not having a cow, one thing lacking another; like a rabbit's horn, which never exists; all nominal dharmas do not exist in conventional truth; and other-powered nature does not exist in ultimate truth. It should be known that the ways of non-existence also have six different forms. The difference between the mind of a phenomenon and the mind of suchness is, as stated in the Ornament of the Sutras: The mind of suchness has no difference in the state of Buddhas and sentient beings, and is always naturally luminous. Then, why do sentient beings not realize it? Because the mind of suchness in the continuum of sentient beings is obscured by the conventional mind, sudden defilements, including the two obscurations, it cannot be realized. The other-powered mind of a phenomenon, which is different from the mind of suchness, is not naturally luminous, because the defilements are sudden. Therefore, the mind itself, which is naturally luminous, can only be said to be suchness. Furthermore, the mind of a phenomenon does not exist in ultimate truth, and it focuses on conventional dharmas. It should be known that its nature appears but is not real, similar to illusions, etc. Similarly, it should be known that the mind of suchness, its nature is not defiled by all afflictions, and its nature is pure, similar to space. Seventh, explaining the nature of dharma and suchness, divided into two parts: a brief indication and a detailed explanation. The first part is: As stated in the Discrimination of Suchness: The complete distinction of dharma, that is, what is established is a phenomenon, which is samsara, belonging to the three realms, because it is a confused conceptualization with all afflictions. It is a confused conceptualization with all afflictions, and it pervades samsara. As stated by the teacher Dignāga: Other than conceptualization, there is nothing called samsara.
