It is also necessary to have a definite connection. Samadhi such as dhyana and the four formless realms are the means of traversing to Brahma. The result of traversing through it is not only the Brahma of the first dhyana, but here it refers to all seventeen types of existence in the form realm. The Sanskrit word for Brahma is "Prahma," which means pure or clean. If the first dhyana is pure and clean, then the three higher dhyanas gradually become more pure and clean, so all seventeen are called Brahma. Thus, these two are worldly, while the three of Shravakas, Pratyekabuddhas, and Mahayana are transcendental. Therefore, here there are three divisions of paths: the common path, the uncommon path, and the path that leads to the state of the Victorious One. The first, as mentioned above, is the path of the gods and the path of Brahma, because they only attain manifest high status in the world, so they are worldly paths. It is also called the common path because it has the practices of both externalists and internalists. The uncommon paths are the paths of Shravakas and Pratyekabuddhas. Since the fruits of these two do not attain Buddhahood, they are considered Hinayana. The path of Mahayana is the path that leads beings to the state of the Victorious Teacher, the Buddha. In the Abhidharma, the non-substantial unconditioned phenomena such as space and cessation are described as nominal unconditioned phenomena or mere designations, but not as pure unconditioned phenomena. The reason for this is that for things that do not need to be created and destroyed, there is no such classification. Because non-substantiality is non-existent and relies on objects in the mind, it is not a real unconditioned phenomenon. Therefore, the real unconditioned phenomenon is only the Dharmadhatu ultimate truth. The Blessed One said in the profound Sutras, "Attain the unconditioned!" These all refer to the ultimate Dharmadhatu, and not to others. Because non-substantial things such as space and cessation do not exist, there is no classification of attainment or non-attainment. For something that does not exist, how can it be attained? It is impossible to attain. Even if a false appearance is attained, it is not necessary.
