There is no self-nature. Therefore, since it appears to exist while not existing, it is also shown to be similar to illusion. Third, the way of abandoning is shown to be similar to illusion: Just as a king of illusion is defeated by another king of illusion, but he has no pride, so those princes who see the Dharma of abandonment and antidote as illusion, even if they abandon what is to be abandoned, have no pride. The two, abandonment and antidote, are exemplified by kings because they control the Dharma of defilement and purification. Third, the meaning similar to the eight examples of illusion is explained: The Buddhas who are fully enlightened in the equality of all Dharmas, those who are superior to the Shravakas and Pratyekabuddhas, from those Sutras, the conditioned Dharmas are like illusions. What is said is the six internal sense bases, like an illusory person who, although not real, appears to enjoy objects, so too the eyes and so on, although there is no enjoyer, appear to enjoy. Like a dream is the six external sense bases, because they appear to be enjoyable while being unreal. Like a mirage are the mind and mental factors, just as a mirage causes the illusion of water, so too these two are the basis for the illusion of grasper and grasped. Like a reflection are the six internal sense bases, just as the beauty or ugliness of a reflection depends on the beauty or ugliness of the form, so too their good or bad depends on previous good or bad karma. Like an optical illusion are the six external sense bases, just as a shadow arises from the effect of an umbrella, so too they arise from the effect of the six internal sense bases. The spoken Dharmas are like an echo, because they sound while being unreal. The Dharmas of merit based on Samadhi are like the moon in water, because Samadhi makes the mind clear, and exhaustion on the earth and so on appear. The Bodhisattva's taking birth in Samsara according to their wish should be known to be like an emanation, because all actions enter into a state without defilement. The latter three examples each express that meaning. Second, the nature or characteristic of ultimate truth is the Dharmadhatu.

I consider it empty of both the imputed and the dependent, so it does not exist as its own nature. The perfectly established Dharma-nature Suchness is also not non-existent, etc. It has already been explained in the context of the previous three distinctions, so it will not be elaborated here. Second, the way of explaining by exchanging words between the teacher Nagarjuna and myself is: The way in which the Dharma-nature ultimate truth possesses five characteristics such as self-awareness, and three characteristics, is also explained by the teacher Nagarjuna in the Root Wisdom of the Middle Way. Among them, the five characteristics are: The wisdom of the Dharma-nature Suchness is the object of the wisdom of individual self-awareness, so it is not known from being taught by others; its nature is not contaminated by obscurations, so it is originally peaceful; all the elaborations of conventional truth have not touched its nature, so it is without elaboration; its essence is non-conceptual wisdom, so it is without conceptuality; although the Dharma-nature possesses all aspects, all aspects are not different in meaning, but are inseparable and of one taste with Suchness. These five characteristics are the characteristics of the Dharma-nature Suchness. The three characteristics are: If any Dharma is a thing that arises from cause and condition, then it is not spontaneously accomplished, but becomes something made by others. However, the wisdom of the Dharma-nature Suchness does not need to be newly created by cause and condition, but is always present as spontaneously accomplished; what is spontaneously accomplished is not modified by other causes and conditions; it is self-arisen, so it does not depend on others and is independent, that is, it possesses three characteristics. Furthermore, the Dharma-nature Suchness is free from being expressed by words and is negated, therefore, it must also be negated as the object of the conventional mind consciousness, because speech and words must be initiated by conceptual thought. Thus, it is reasonable that Suchness is negated as the object of speech and thought, because the Dharma-nature Suchness transcends the realm of speech, thought, and expression. The way of explaining of the Middle Way self-emptiness proponents is different from these, so it should not be mixed with this. Third, there are five points to explain the characteristics of the ultimate truth as explained in the Discrimination between the Middle and the Extremes.
