because these are completely non-existent. Fifth, examining one and different. Generally, there are two views: one holds that the two truths are the same in essence but different in aspect; the other holds that it cannot be said that they are the same or different in essence. Here, the latter is taken as the standard. These two truths are different on the basis of negating the same essence, because from the perspective of essence, they are neither the same nor different. Moreover, as for our own system, although it is established as the essence of ultimate truth, it is not established as the essence of conventional truth. If one considers the essence to be the same, then there would be the four faults mentioned in the *Saṃdhinirmocana Sūtra*: if the two truths were the same in essence, then when children and ordinary beings see the conventional truth, they should also be able to see the ultimate truth, thus leading to their already being liberated; just as attachment and other afflictions increase when focusing on the conventional truth, afflictions should also increase when focusing on the ultimate truth, which is the other, thus leading to the ultimate truth becoming the object of afflictions; just as there is no difference in the ultimate truth, there should also be no difference in the conventional truth; and, apart from what is seen and heard by conventional consciousness, there should be no ultimate truth to be sought, because the two truths are the same in essence. If the two are other, i.e., different, then there would also be four faults: even if the ultimate truth is seen, the belief in the reality of the conventional truth would not be reversed; the ultimate truth should not become the nature of the conventional truth; merely because there is no conventional truth, the nature should not become the ultimate truth; and, in the continuum of one person, there should simultaneously exist both afflictions and pure qualities, because the two are different. This is what is said in the *Saṃdhinirmocana Sūtra*. Furthermore, for the perfect reality and other-nature of the ultimate truth, one should know how to apply these eight faults accordingly. Second, explaining the establishment of the nature of the two truths, there are three methods: the method of explaining through the exchange of words between the venerable Maitreya and myself; the method of explaining through the exchange of words between the master Nāgārjuna and myself; and the method explained in the *Madhyāntavibhāga*. The first method has two parts: a brief statement and a detailed explanation. First, the brief statement: phenomena, i.e., conventional truths, are called like illusions, because their own nature is empty of truth, but they exist merely as appearances. The nature of phenomena, i.e.,

The truth of the ultimate truth, its own nature does not change; in the presence of the Samadhi wisdom of the noble ones who are empty of the two graspers, it is the truth. Second, the extensive explanation is divided into: the explanation of the nature of the conventional truth of the dharma, and the explanation of the nature of the ultimate truth of the dharma nature. First, the explanation of the nature of the conventional truth of the dharma is divided into: explaining the necessity of showing the grasper as illusory, explaining the grasped as illusory, and explaining the meaning similar to the eight kinds of illusions. First, it is divided into: the situation of the object, the way of realization with wisdom, and the display of the non-existence of the duality of the object. The first is: just as the objects of illusion, such as pebbles and branches, are the basis for being confused as horses and cows, the basis for being confused as the two graspers is the other-dependent, which is not true, the completely conceptualized. Just as pebbles and branches are transformed into the appearance of horses and cows by illusion mantras, the completely conceptualized also appears as duality on the basis of the non-duality of the two graspers, so it is said to be the object of confusion. Just as the objects of illusion, the nature of horses and cows, etc., does not exist on it, the nature of the completely conceptualized does not exist on the other-dependent, this is the ultimate truth. Just as the objects of illusion, focusing on horses and cows, etc., appear as duality, this is the appearance of the conventional truth, the ultimate truth and the conventional truth mentioned here are not real, but are established on the temporary ultimate truth and conventional truth, because the aspect of consciousness only, which is the completely conceptualized, is separated from the two graspers, is also the real conventional truth and the temporary ultimate truth. Second, the way of realization with wisdom is: if the illusion transformed by the illusion mantra does not exist, then its cause, pebbles, trees, etc., will appear clearly, similarly, if these objects of confusion have been transformed into other states, and the wisdom of the noble ones has been obtained, then after directly realizing the dharma nature with Samadhi wisdom, from the post-attainment position of emerging from Samadhi, the non-true completely conceptualized other-dependent will become the object of focus. Just as those in the world who are not confused, are not confused by the pebbles and trees of illusion, and use them as they wish, those who are disciplined and diligent are not confused
