Thereafter, possessing carefulness. Nanda, the younger brother and fellow of the Bhagavan, who had great desire. Angulimala, who had extreme hatred. And Dröshen, King Ajatasatru who killed his father, and Deje who committed the five inexpiable sins of killing his mother. Those too, later, through acting carefully with a mind of regret, were like obtaining the complete meaning of their own needs. In particular, the advice to be careful in abandoning anger is: There is no asceticism equal to patience. Do not give an opportunity for your anger. By abandoning anger, one obtains non-retrogression. The Buddha promised. Anger is the antidote to hatred, and there is no asceticism equal to patience. Because, the asceticism that inflicts suffering on the body, such as relying on five fires, fasting, and being naked, even the sages who are able to endure, abandon curses etc. because they cannot endure the harm of others, so patience that does not care about harm is also the most difficult. The asceticism that inflicts suffering on the body has no benefit, and it does not become a method for purifying sins and attaining liberation. Patience increases the qualities of the path, and it is the most excellent of the dharmas to be practiced, therefore, one should not allow anger, which is the conducive condition for patience, to arise in the mindstream, and if it arises, one should immediately cut it off and return from anger, so do not give anger any opportunity, not giving an opportunity means not giving it at all. Thus, by abandoning anger and abiding in the qualities of patience, one will obtain non-retrogression, which is promised or taught by the Buddha. As it is said in the Hearer's Pitaka: Bhikshu, what is the non-retrogression of a Shramana? A Brahmin and a Shramana do not get angry, do not get extremely angry, do not hold grudges, completely abandon taking up sticks, completely abandon taking up weapons, that is the non-retrogression of a Shramana. Thus it is said. Non-retrogression, if considered in terms of the Mahayana Bodhisattva path, from the Path of Accumulation to the Eighth Ground, there are many established boundaries for how to obtain non-retrogression.

Moreover, regarding the path of the Hearers, it is said that from the attainment of forbearance on the path of joining, there is no turning back. To abandon anger, one must first abandon resentment, namely: 'This person insulted me, beat me, caused me to fail; this person stole my wealth,' and so on. Because of holding resentment, various disputes arise; abandoning all resentment, one can sleep peacefully. 'This person openly slandered me, attacked me with harsh words; this person struck me and beat me; this person defeated me through debate and argument; this person stole my wealth,' and so on. There are nine situations that cause suffering: 'This person harmed me, is harming me, will harm me; this person harmed my relatives and allies, is harming, will harm; this person helped my enemy, is helping, will help.' Like this, with a firm mind holding anger and hatred, leading to disputes arising from resentment, one must abandon these to sleep peacefully, and so on. In all actions, completely abandon resentment and abide in happiness. After observing one's own and others' actions, advise with caution. Among these, training to be mindful by observing one's own actions is divided into training to be mindful by observing the actions of the mind and training to be mindful by observing the actions of speech. The first is: 'The mind is like a drawing on water, earth, and stone; recognize it as such.' Among these, for those with afflictions, the first is the best; for those who desire the Dharma, it is the worst. Although there are many usages of the word 'mind,' here it refers to attention. And there are three types of attention: like drawing on water, attention is unstable; like drawing on earth, attention is somewhat stable; like drawing on stone, attention is very stable. One should recognize and understand the classification of the mind represented by these three similes. Each of these three also has three types of attention: virtuous, non-virtuous, and neutral. But from the perspective of what to adopt and abandon, there are only two: virtuous and non-virtuous. For non-virtuous afflictions, one should ensure that the mind does not arise in the first place; even if it arises, it should be quickly abandoned, because the attention of afflicted conceptual thought is the first, like drawing on water.
