The Commentary on the Letter to a Friend. The Commentary on the Letter to a Friend. The Commentary on the Letter to a Friend, as spoken by the venerable omniscient Tāranātha, was written down by Desi Phuntsok Namgyal. Whoever pervades the boundless expanse of Dharma, encompassing all that is knowable, the inner wisdom, self-aware and clear, knows as it is and how it is. May the ocean of aspirations, transformed into a treasure of love, effortlessly accomplish the supreme meaning of samsara and nirvana through spontaneously accomplished actions. I prostrate to the King of Buddhas. The immaculate path of the venerable Nāgārjuna's teachings, thoroughly illuminated, is the wisdom of a precious lamp. Having obtained this through his kindness, venerable master, I shall write as the words of the incomparable lama. Furthermore, in explaining this treatise, the Letter to a Friend, first, the meaning of the title: In the Indian language: Suhrllekha. In Tibetan: Letter to a Friend. It means to instruct in writing from afar to King Decyo, who is close in heart and a dear friend, hence it is called Letter to a Friend. The homage of the translation is made to the noble Manjushri, meaning "having become young." It means that in the past, having practiced bodhicitta, during the time of practice, from birth to all births, from home to homelessness, having completely renounced, constantly abiding only in pure conduct. Like a child, a youth abiding in purity, hence the bodhisattva is called the stage of youth. The main text consists of the introduction and the actual text. The first part is: I, who possess the nature of good qualities and am worthy of virtue, from the words of the Sugata, for the sake of increasing merit, these noble verses, slightly compiled, are what you should listen to. The object to be taught is one who is of noble lineage, abundant in wisdom, and possesses the nature of qualities such as faith and diligence. Always acting virtuously, abiding in what is appropriate and reasonable, having called him king. I, the instructor Nāgārjuna, the essence of the instruction is not self-created, but as it appears in the scriptures of the Sugata, the teachings that arise from repeatedly explaining the meaning. The necessity is the king's desire for merit, or for the further increase of virtuous thoughts and actions. How

The way of instruction is: from the unequal combinations within the caste, the combinations are arranged into a sublime tone and completed, that is, from the Buddha's teachings like an ocean, these, which are slightly arranged for the sake of necessary and close needs, should be heard by you, the king. The remaining meaning of the introduction is: just as the body of the Sugata, even if made of wood, no matter how it is made, the wise will make offerings. Similarly, although my poetry is poor, it relies on speaking the Dharma, so it should not be blamed. If someone says that one should not listen to a bad instructor, then, the body of the Sugata Buddha, even if made of ordinary wood, the shape, not possessing the measure, no matter how well it is made, because it is a Buddha image, it will be the object of offering for wise people, similarly, I, Nagarjuna, am an ordinary person, a bad instructor, and the words I speak, my poetry is both poor and not exquisite, but because it relies on speaking the meaning of the Buddha's pure Dharma without impurities, that is, because it relies on it. Because it is repeating what the Buddha said before, it should not be blamed, but should be accepted. This is a humble statement. Also, the remaining meaning is: the Great Hero's teachings are wonderful, even if they are already clear in your heart, why not make them even whiter? If it is said that there is nothing better than what the Buddha said to show, so there is no need to repeat the teachings, then, the words of the Great Hero's teachings, are heart-touching and meaningful, wonderful and beautiful sentences, you, the king, have already understood and known in your heart, but, to clarify again, and, the Buddha's scriptures are vast and numerous, in which the meanings are scattered, gathering these together, will not become chaotic, will become like a memorandum. For example, a white house plastered with lime, if illuminated by moonlight, why would it not become even whiter? It will become even whiter. The main text is, the two dharmas that precede all paths.
