Explanation of the precepts and the benefits of keeping them: Your precepts are neither lost nor inferior, neither mixed nor defiled, please keep them. Precepts are like land with and without cause, and are said to be the basis and support of all virtues. Wise people like you should keep and rely on precepts that have four characteristics. That is, the precepts that are not lost, not inferior, not mixed, and not defiled, these four characteristics are possessed. As it says in the Vinaya: "The cause of evil precepts, no auspiciousness arises, one should rely on its antidote, and the peaceful deity." Like this, guarding the root and branches without losing them in practice is the precept of not losing. Even if you keep it without losing it in practice, but if the antidote is not strong enough and the mind is disturbed by afflictions, the precept will become inferior because of its weak power. Therefore, keeping the precepts without harboring unwholesome thoughts such as greed and hatred in the mind is the precept of not being inferior. Not being attached to unpleasant things, etc., and cultivating antidotes such as loving-kindness and dependent origination, so that they are not mixed with afflictions, is the precept of not being mixed. The so-called precepts of protecting the world are to avoid being deprived of livelihood, or to be exempt from military service, taxes, burdens, interest, etc., or to protect the world for the sake of fame, respect, gain, and relatives in this life. Keeping precepts is defiled by the discrimination of this life. Also, the so-called precepts of aspiring to goodness are to keep precepts in order to obtain the happiness of gods and humans in the next life, which is also defiled by attachment to the happiness of samsara. Not being defiled by these, learning the precepts of seeking liberation and definitely arising is the precept of not being defiled, which is the precept that possesses four characteristics. Mahayana practitioners not only possess these four characteristics, but also do not only seek liberation for themselves, but also seek to liberate all sentient beings from samsara, and learn the precepts that arise from all aspects. Here, in the commentary of the teacher Mahamati, it is said that if one is missing a precept, it is a loss, and if one violates the sutra, it is a lying woman, but I don't think this is appropriate. Like this, the benefits of keeping the precepts are:

Sentient beings, including humans and animals, also rely on the earth to live and thrive. Mountains, forests, rivers, crops, and other inanimate objects also arise from the earth. Similarly, all virtues such as samadhi and wisdom arise from discipline, therefore discipline is the foundation of all of them, as the Buddha said. Regarding the uncommon practices of the Great Vehicle that are related to faith, it is said that the cause is the six perfections and the result is the two grounds of Buddhahood: Giving, discipline, patience, diligence, meditation, and likewise, wisdom are immeasurable perfections. By making these the cause, cross the ocean of existence, and become the lord of the victorious ones. That is, starting from the perfection of giving immeasurable and boundless generosity, up to the perfection of generating immeasurable and boundless discipline, patience, diligence, meditation, and wisdom, these six perfections should be increased without partiality. The way to increase them is to be embraced by the thought of great compassion in the preliminary stage; in the main stage, to give to all objects at all times and places through various doors of giving; to accomplish with wisdom, and to endlessly increase the three practices of hearing, thinking, and meditating at all times. In the concluding stage, dedicate it to perfect enlightenment for the benefit of all sentient beings, thereby increasing it. In all stages of preparation, main practice, and conclusion, the skillful means are the branch, the giver, the object of giving, and the recipient, all of which are like illusions, embraced by the wisdom that does not discriminate the three spheres, etc., thus making the six perfections complete with four branches, and thereby crossing the ocean of existence, which is like the ocean, the places of samsara are boundless like the vastness of the ocean; like the depth of the ocean, it is difficult to escape once submerged; like the ocean, which is full of fear from fierce creatures such as crocodiles, samsara is full of the fear of suffering; like the ocean, which is difficult to cross, samsara is difficult to liberate from, and there is no way to liberate except through practicing Dharma. Therefore, to cross from such an ocean of samsara and reach the end of the other shore is to become the lord of the victorious ones, the state of Buddhahood.
