That is faith and carefulness. Among the categories of faith, the first is how to cultivate faith: The Victorious One (Buddha) said, "Buddha, Dharma, Sangha, and generosity, discipline, deities, mindfulness, thus well spoken, each with a collection of merits, remember accordingly." The Victorious One said to the retinue, "You should cultivate the six types of mindfulness: mindfulness of the Buddha, mindfulness of the Dharma, mindfulness of the Sangha, mindfulness of generosity, mindfulness of discipline, and mindfulness of the deities." Thus taught, that is, the qualities of the Buddha's body, speech, and mind, the benefits of the Dharma, the qualities of the Sangha, the benefits of generosity and discipline, the qualities of the abodes, bodies, and enjoyments of the deities of the desire and form realms, arising from the cause of practicing virtue, and how those respective collections of qualities exist, and remembering accordingly, is mindfulness. The deities of the desire and form realms are the result of past virtuous deeds, possessing clairvoyance, able to directly see the good and bad deeds done in the world, therefore, if the holy Dharma is not practiced properly, the deities will also feel ashamed. The ordained ones remember and take them as witnesses. Faith is also divided into faith in persons and faith in the Dharma. Mindfulness of the Buddha and the Sangha is faith in individuals. Mindfulness of the Dharma, generosity, discipline, and deities is faith in the Dharma, that is, mindfulness of the Dharma is the essence of faith in the Dharma, and faith in generosity and discipline is individual faith in those two among the practices of realization. Mindfulness of the deities, also because of faith in their virtuous cause, is included in faith in the Dharma. Explaining the conduct of having faith, the first is to show that one must abide in the ten paths of virtuous action: The ten paths of virtuous action, body, speech, and mind, always rely on and practice, refrain from all kinds of alcohol, likewise, be delighted in virtuous livelihood. Killing, taking what is not given, sexual misconduct, are the three actions of the body. Lying, divisive speech, harsh speech, idle chatter...

What are the actions? Greed, harmful thoughts, and wrong views are the three actions of the mind. Thus, abandon the ten non-virtuous actions with the mind, and turn away from them with the actions of body and speech. Thus, the ten paths of abandoning the ten non-virtuous actions are constantly relied upon by body, speech, and mind, and one abides in abandoning sins. Moreover, if one becomes intoxicated and reckless due to drinking alcohol, one will engage in non-virtuous actions, so one should also refrain from these. Not living by wrong livelihood, such as stealing the property of the Three Jewels, but living by right livelihood, and also rejoicing in these. After that, the method of learning to give is to show the three reasons for giving alms, the object of giving, and how to give alms: Knowing that enjoyment is moving and meaningless, to monks, Brahmins, the poor, and friends, I will give alms properly, in the next life there is no better relative than giving. Enjoyments are certainly impermanent and moving, separating and decaying. Not only do they decay and change, but holding on to enjoyments is not beneficial in other lives. Because it is certain to separate and never be satisfied, it is meaningless. If one gives alms, one sees that it has the benefit of obtaining abundant happiness and well-being in the next world, so one should give alms. The object of giving is the field of merit, such as monks, Brahmins who live at home according to the Dharma, the field of suffering, such as the poor and the sick, and the field of benefiting, such as parents and friends, who are worthy of gratitude. These are the main objects of great benefit that are mentioned. Giving alms requires pure intention and behavior. In terms of intention, one should respect the superior objects and arouse compassion and altruism towards the inferior objects. In terms of behavior, giving respectfully, giving at the right time, and giving appropriately are giving that is in harmony with the object of giving. We should practice giving alms in a proper and pure manner. Giving alms in this way has the benefit of producing abundant happiness in the next world and is an incomparable and excellent friend.
