It is considered a precept. The Vaibhashika school believes that the time for observing the precepts of fasting should not be more or less than one day and one night. Even if observed, it is only a virtuous act and is not considered a precept. How to receive it? There are two ways: the actual way of receiving and the difference in the ritual of receiving. The actual way of receiving is as stated in the Abhidharmakosha: "Sit in a low position and say 'passed away'. Do not adorn with human ornaments until dawn. The precepts of fasting with complete limbs should be received from others until dawn." This explains that the way to receive the precepts is to sit on a low seat. Recite as the Acharya says that the precepts can be conferred, do not adorn with new ornaments, and until dawn tomorrow, fully observe the eight-limbed precepts of fasting. Tomorrow morning, at dawn, one should receive them from another Acharya. The Vaibhashika school believes that one must always receive them from others. The Sravaka Sutra school and the Mahayana school believe that one must first receive them from the Acharya, but then one can also obtain them by receiving them oneself. The difference in the ritual of receiving is that the Hinayana Sravaka school believes that by taking refuge as a preliminary and making a commitment three times, one obtains the precepts of fasting. The Mahayana school believes that by taking refuge as a preliminary and making a commitment related to generating Bodhicitta, one obtains them. One must abide in the precepts of fasting with eight limbs. Abiding in the precepts of abandoning the four root downfalls is a limb of morality. For each of the four root downfalls, if the four limbs of basis, intention, action, and completion are complete, the precepts are destroyed. The basis has two aspects: the support and the object. Intention has two aspects: motivation and recognition. Action and completion do not have inherent distinctions. In general, the support is knowing that one has obtained and not lost the precepts and abiding naturally. The object, killing, is other beings who are humans or born as humans. Taking what is not given is taking possession of valuable objects owned by humans, such as five masha or a quarter of a karshapana, which is about half a silver sho. Engaging in impure conduct is relying on the birth place, mouth, and excretory paths, that is, the three doors that are not damaged. Lying is speech that claims to be true after changing the recognition of what is the supreme Dharma of humans, the object is humans.

Troba said: In terms of intention, for killing, from the depths of one's heart, the thought of killing arises; for taking what is not given, wanting to take the possessions of others as one's own; for engaging in impure conduct, wanting to rely on the Dharma of intercourse; for lying, speaking of human qualities as supreme, it is a lie that reverses understanding, wanting to speak. In terms of recognition, for killing, such as slaughtering offerings to please the gods, for what is not mistaken, the wisdom that is not confused about this. For taking what is not given, for taking the property of others, confusing one's own property and recognition; for taking what is not complete in value, thinking it is complete; for what is not mistaken, the wisdom that is not confused about this. For engaging in impure conduct, as it is said in the scriptures, for intercourse, there is no saying that recognition is primary, therefore it is said that whether or not recognition is reversed depends entirely on this. For lying, such as saying that one has attained the fruit of entering the stream, but actually saying that one has attained the fruit of an Arhat, for what is not a mistake in words, the wisdom that is not confused about this. In terms of action, for killing, personally engaging in the act of killing, or causing others to do it, praising death, and then causing oneself to die, killing with weapons, mantras, and medicines, etc. For taking what is not given, forcibly seizing the wealth of others, secretly stealing, causing others to steal after robbing others of their wealth, enticing with mantras. For engaging in impure conduct, in any of the three gates that have not declined, relying on this and engaging in intercourse. For lying, speaking of human qualities as supreme, actually speaking of what people have heard. In terms of the ultimate, life is cut off, or before life is cut off, the thought of killing has not ceased. For taking what is not given, the thought of obtaining arises. For engaging in impure conduct, experiencing the pleasure of semen emission. For lying, what people understand is the ultimate. If the basis, intention, action, and ultimate are all complete, one will commit a sin similar to the defeat of a Bhikshu, and even if only one of the four root sins is violated, the vows will be destroyed. If these branches are not complete, then the sins committed are only gross sins, which will only lead to the degradation of the vows, but will not lead to the destruction of the vows. Among the four: basis, intention, action, and ultimate, if the intention is not complete, then the intention is not afflicted, therefore the sin is lighter. Even if it is only a reversal of recognition,
