In summary, actions driven by afflictions and actions that have already been committed are the limb of formation (saṃskāra). These two are categorized within the first life. In the intermediate state (bardo) and the state of connection, although there is consciousness (vijñāna), there is no form aggregate (rūpa-skandha), so it is called the limb of consciousness. When the consciousness of the intermediate state enters the mother's womb and the white, red, and mind mix, there are the four mental aggregates (nāma) and just the form aggregate, but the four sense bases such as the eye have not arisen, so it is called the limb of name and form (nāma-rūpa). When five months are complete, on top of the existing sense bases of body and mind, the four sense bases such as the eye sense base manifest, completing the six sense bases, but one cannot act on objects such as forms, so it is called the limb of the six sense bases (ṣaḍāyatana). From birth to when the six faculties engage with objects, although there is contact (sparśa), one does not know the cause of pleasure and pain, so it is called the limb of dependent origination of contact. From the stage of being able to speak and walk, although there is a coarse feeling (vedanā) of knowing the cause of pleasure and pain, there is no desire for sexual activity, so it is called the limb of dependent origination of feeling. In the stage of twelve years old and so on, although there is desire for sexual activity, one cannot engage in intercourse, so desire is strong and grasping is weak, thus it is the limb of existence (bhava) in dependent origination. In the stage of sixteen years old and so on, one begins to engage in sexual activity, acting on the object of desire, so grasping is strong, but because one is not mature, one cannot accumulate much intentional bodily strength, so it is the limb of grasping (upādāna). From maturity to death, one engages greatly in virtuous and non-virtuous actions, so it is the limb of existence. These eight limbs are complete in the intermediate life. The existence of the intermediate state and the existence of connection are both categorized within birth (jāti), from dwelling in the mother's womb to emerging is the limb of dependent origination of birth, and from birth to decay and death is the limb of dependent origination of aging and death (jarā-maraṇa). These two limbs are applied to the third life. Among them, the followers of the noble Nāgārjuna mostly consider the wheel of dependent origination to be three lives, while the noble Asaṅga mostly considers it to be complete in two lives.

Furthermore, the nine from ignorance to grasping are complete in the previous life, and the latter three are connected to the subsequent life. This is the way: ignorance and formation are the limbs that propel, and consciousness and the other five are the limbs that are propelled. Craving, grasping, and existence are the limbs of accomplishment, and birth and death are the limbs that are accomplished, totaling four limbs. These are the dependent origination of conventional truth. For the time being, let's not talk about the dependent origination of ultimate truth, which is the temporary ultimate truth. For example, the limb of formation does not arise from self, other, both, neither, or neither, but without investigation or analysis, due to ignorance, it is called formation, and from that collection, only that phenomenon appears, which is unstoppable. This is not elaborated here. When explaining the eightfold noble path, it is divided into two parts: the actual and the implied meaning. The first part is to identify the eightfold noble path: right view, right livelihood, right effort, right mindfulness, right concentration, right speech, right action, and right thought are the eight limbs of the path. This is cultivated for the sake of peace. That is, right view, and similarly adding right livelihood, right effort, right mindfulness, right concentration, right speech, right action, and right thought. These are both the right path and the limbs, so they are the eight limbs of the right path. This is practiced in order to pacify the afflictions and sufferings that have not been pacified, and to bring those that have been pacified to complete perfection. The reason for presenting it in this order in this treatise is due to the rules of poetry, otherwise it can be summarized as view, thought, speech, action, livelihood, effort, mindfulness, and concentration. The sutras also speak of it in this order. Among them, right view is the wisdom without outflows that realizes the meaning of reality without distortion. Right thought is the altruistic mind that wishes others to realize the meaning of reality as one has realized it oneself. Right speech is to explain the reality that one has realized to others with pure language and words. Right action is the special virtuous conduct of abandoning even the slightest non-virtue with body, speech, and mind.
