Mindfulness, discrimination of dharma, and diligence, joy, serenity, concentration, and equanimity are the seven branches of enlightenment, the virtuous gatherings that attain nirvana. Right mindfulness is a branch of perfect enlightenment. Discrimination of dharma is wisdom, diligence, joy, serenity, concentration, and equanimity are also branches of perfect enlightenment. These are called the seven branches of enlightenment. Enlightenment is liberation, nirvana, and a branch is something that accords with it, meaning it is a means of accomplishing it. Virtuous gatherings. These are practices for attaining nirvana, so one should diligently meditate on them. Furthermore, it is similarly stated in the Ornament of the Sutras and the Distinguishing the Middle from the Extremes: "The branch of nature, the branch of place, the third is the branch of emergence, the fourth is the branch of benefit, the three are the branches without affliction." The so-called nature is the meaning of reality or main thing, so the wisdom that realizes selflessness is the main basis of the branch of enlightenment, so it is the branch of nature. The meaning of place is the meaning of basis, and not forgetting the meaning of the object of selflessness, the mindfulness that gives rise to wisdom from that is the branch of place, and emergence is where one goes from above, so diligence increases wisdom, so diligence is the branch of emergence. The meaning of benefit is temporary benefit, and realizing the meaning of selflessness and emptiness brings about special joy and happiness, which is temporary benefit, so joy and happiness are the branch of benefit. Serenity, concentration, and equanimity are the three branches without affliction. In the Distinguishing the Middle from the Extremes it says: "Here, it is spoken of as basis, place, and nature." The so-called basis is the meaning of cause, the latent tendencies of affliction, and the habitual actions of body, speech, and mind that accord with them are bad states, and those must first be diligently guarded and prevented, so that even if one does not intentionally guard them, they will not arise due to the power of habituation. Furthermore, engaging in one's own virtue is the cause of the arising of non-affliction.

Therefore, extreme familiarization is the basis, and the abode is the meaning of becoming the support. The wisdom without afflictions abides for a long time, and the samadhi arising from samadhi is the abode without afflictions, and the nature of wisdom without afflictions is equanimity, that is, without attachment and without aversion. Secondly, regarding the meaning of interpolation, among the seven limbs of enlightenment, the main ones for practice are discriminating wisdom and the samadhi of meditation: without wisdom there is no meditation, and without meditation there is no wisdom. Whoever possesses these two, the cycle of the ocean should be crossed like a cow's footprint. If there is no combination of hearing and thinking wisdom with non-inversion, then it is impossible to cultivate the meditation that abides in the meaning of reality. Without that meditation, there is no arising of uncontaminated wisdom arising from cultivation that abandons afflictions and directly sees the nature of reality. If the wisdom of hearing, thinking, and meditation and the meditation that abides in the true meaning are complete in one's own mindstream, then even the difficult-to-cross ocean of samsara can be crossed without effort like the water in a cow's hoofprint, that is, one has the ability. Furthermore, the interpolated meaning here is that if it is said that one is liberated from samsara by wisdom, and all views are of the nature of wisdom, then are the fourteen views such as the world having an end also liberated by cultivation? If asked, it is not so, then it is shown: In the world of the unpredicted fourteen views, which ones were well spoken by the friend of the sun? Those should not be thought about, for their minds are not pacified. The world has an end, etc. The fourteen views that are well-known in the world are the names of the unpredicted views spoken by the friend of the sun, that is, the fully enlightened Buddha, which ones were well spoken. Such wisdom of wrong views should not be thought about and cultivated, because their minds, that is, the afflictions of their own mindstream, cannot be pacified. The summary of the fourteen unpredicted views: I and the world have an end, and both have no end.
