Also experiences suffering. Regarding the suffering of pretas, there are brief teachings and detailed explanations. First: Even as a preta, due to the lack of desires, The suffering that arises is continuous and unchangeable, Generated by hunger, thirst, cold, heat, fatigue, and fear, Extremely unbearable, one must endure. Having been born in the realm of pretas, one feels deprived due to the inability to find desires. The suffering that arises from the non-fulfillment of desires occurs without any interval of happiness. It is a continuous stream of suffering, and because it is the maturation of the powerful force of negative karma, it is unchangeable, i.e., incurable. Hunger, thirst, cold, heat, and wandering in all directions for long periods of time, such as twelve years, in search of a single meal and drink, one becomes exhausted and weary. Fear is, within the pretas, there is the fear of the enemy within the mind, Other beings also become enemies, suffering harm, etc. The suffering generated by great fear is extremely unbearable and must be endured. The detailed explanation is, describing the suffering of those with obscurations among the pretas: Some have mouths as small as the eye of a needle, But stomachs as large as mountains, threatened by hunger, For the discarded, insignificant impure things, They do not possess the power to seek. Many pretas have mouths as small as the eye of a needle, but the oral cavity is wide, the throat is very thin, and the stomach is as large as a mountain. Their limbs are slender, giving the impression that they cannot support the body. For them, let alone good food, even if they find a small amount of discarded impure things, they cannot enter the mouth and do not have the power to seek and eat. Even if it enters the mouth, it will fall out because the oral cavity is wide, and it cannot enter the throat. Even if it barely enters the stomach, it is useless because the stomach is too large, so they are threatened by great hunger. Describing the suffering of those with obstacles to food and drink, and those with wheels of fire: Some pretas are only skin and bones, naked, Like the dry top of a palm tree. Some have flames burning from their genitals and mouths, Seeking sand falling on the burning flames as food. Many pretas have no flesh on their bodies, only skin and bones remain

The land is parched, and the body is naked due to lack of clothing, like the top of a dry palm tree scorched by the sun. The complexion is pale and repulsive, the body is without moisture, and the three hundred and sixty joints clash against each other, the bones making a sound. Like striking flint, flames erupt from the joints, burning the body. Moreover, each night they burn alone, their food is sand, falling into their mouths, burned by the flames erupting from their mouths, forced by karma to eat against their will. The grains of sand burn the internal organs of the body, causing intense suffering. This is a description of the suffering of pretas with external obscurations: Some wretched beings cannot even find pus, feces, and blood, or other impure substances. They gather together, face to face, and from their throats grow swollen boils filled with pus. Most pretas are wretched beings who, needless to say, cannot find good food, but cannot even obtain a little of impure substances like pus, feces, and blood from others. These pretas hate each other and beat each other, and the blood that flows from wounds on their faces, etc., and the pus from their swollen, ripe boils, they consume as food. The suffering of cold and heat is: For pretas, in the summer season, the moon feels hot, and in the winter, even the sun feels cold. These trees without fruit, merely by looking at them, even rivers dry up. For pretas, in the hot summer season, the moon, wind, rain, and so on become allies of the heat, causing them suffering. In the cold winter season, the sun and fire, and other great things, become allies of the cold, causing their bodies to freeze. This is not only the suffering of pretas with external obscurations, but also occurs to most pretas. Seeing fruit-laden trees from afar, they run towards them, but upon arriving nearby, they turn into barren, dry trees. Seeing flowing rivers from afar, they run towards them, but merely by looking, the rivers disappear, turning into sand and dry gravel, impossible to find, which is not only the suffering of not finding food, but also the suffering of unfulfilled hope and despair.
