One should rely on the excellent guru! Whoever relies well on a virtuous friend, it is highly likely that the complete path to liberation will arise in their mindstream. Furthermore, by relying on the excellent individuals—the Buddhas—just as countless beings in the past attained the state of peace and nirvana, so too, by relying on virtuous friends now, corresponding qualities will arise. Regarding the teachings on virtuous friends, the Sutra of Minor Lengths states: Relying on a virtuous friend, dwelling together with virtue, relying on virtue and not relying on evil friends, not dwelling together with evil, not relying on evil—this is for the sake of pure conduct. When Ananda asked, the Buddha said: Ananda, this is the complete, ultimate, unmixed, fully perfected, fully purified, and fully cleansed pure conduct. Here, "virtue" should be understood as virtuous friends, and "evil" should be understood as evil friends. Third, explaining leisure as distinct from the eight unfree states: Holding wrong views and animals, And birth as a hungry ghost or in hell, Without the Victor's teachings and in border regions, Birth as a barbarian, and as a foolish mute, Whatever birth as a long-lived god, Are called the eight faults of unfreedom. Having obtained leisure free from these, Strive to avert rebirth. Holding wrong views means denying the law of cause and effect or slandering the Three Jewels. And birth as an animal, a hungry ghost, or in hell; and without the Victor's teachings, that is, being born where a Buddha has not appeared in the world, or in a border region where the Dharma has not spread even if a Buddha has appeared; birth as a barbarian; and being foolish and ignorant, not knowing what to adopt or abandon in the Dharma; and becoming a long-lived god—whichever of these eight one is born into, it is a flawed state of not having the leisure to practice the Dharma. Therefore, having obtained leisure and freedom from these, one should strive to avert rebirth under the power of karma and afflictions. Some long-lived gods belong to the Formless Realm.

Some consider the gods of the desire realm to be happy, while others consider them to be gods who have been transformed by lacking the qualities of desire, but because they are slightly uncomfortable, they must be explained as unconscious gods. Here, the ten endowments are explained: "Being human, born in the central land, with complete faculties, not having reversed karma, having faith in the place, the Buddha came, and he taught the Dharma, the teachings remain, and follow them, cherishing others in your heart." As summarized, obtaining a human body, being born in a central land where the Dharma flourishes, having complete five senses, not having reversed karma, i.e., not having committed the five heinous crimes, having faith in the place, i.e., having faith in the well-spoken Vinaya, having faith in the Buddha's teachings, these are the five self-endowments. The Buddha came into the world, he taught the Dharma, the teachings remain, oneself joins the Sangha, there are those who provide robes and alms for the ordained, or there are those who provide favorable conditions for the Dharma, these are the five other-endowments. Having leisure that is free from the eight non-freedoms, the five self-endowments are complete, and the ten endowments are complete, which is merely having the opportunity to practice the Dharma, and on top of that, if one has the four wheels of leisure, then one will definitely practice the Dharma. Explaining the suffering of samsara, there are three parts: summary, explanation, and conclusion. The first part is: "King, because of the poverty of desire and death, and the suffering of sickness and old age, etc., the source of arising is samsara, be weary of it, and listen to some of its faults." Calling out to the king in this way, the poverty of desire is: the suffering of seeking desire and not finding it, and the hope without fruit, these and the suffering of sickness, old age, death, etc., which always arise continuously, one should be weary of the source of arising, samsara, and also listen to some of the faults of samsara, that is, to speak roughly. The second part is the explanation, which is divided into explaining the general suffering of samsara and explaining the suffering of each realm of beings. The first part is, following the six sufferings of samsara spoken of in the sutras, that is, suffering because of uncertainty, suffering because of insatiability, suffering because of repeatedly abandoning the body, and suffering because of repeatedly taking the body.
