The consciousness of the ear, the consciousness of the nose, the consciousness of the tongue, the consciousness of the body, the consciousness of the mind—these six consciousnesses are the entering consciousnesses. And the mind with afflictions, together with the alaya consciousness, are the eight aggregates. These five aggregates encompass all conditioned phenomena. Those known as material are included within the aggregate of form, while consciousnesses are included within the latter four aggregates. If we differentiate aggregates, there are those included within the continuum of sentient beings and those not included. Those included within the continuum are the body, speech, and mind of sentient beings. Those not included are the container world. The meaning of "aggregate" is "heaped up." The aggregate of form is a real heap, accumulated and aggregated from particles. Although consciousnesses do not fully possess the meaning of a real heap, the many past and future moments of consciousness that accumulate and aggregate are aggregates held by the mind. What is different from the aggregates is non-material, because they do not possess real arising, ceasing, results, causes, and conditions. The aggregates are produced by various causes and conditions. Therefore, unlike the beliefs of many outsiders, the aggregates are not produced from the will of a lord, nor are they produced by something else established as a substance called time. Nor, as the Samkhyas believe, are they produced from the inherent nature that is the unity of the three—dust, desire, darkness, hatred, courage, and virtue. Therefore, they are not produced from dissimilar causes, nor does one's own essence produce oneself, because that is impossible. Things are also not produced from the arbitrary will to arise and cease as one pleases. Here, "arbitrary will" refers to a situation like a fall from the sky, where one arises as one wishes without relying on other causes and conditions. Nor is it without cause, because sometimes it arises and sometimes it ceases. Therefore, it arises from concordant causes, dependent origination, and various causes and conditions. Ignorance and craving must necessarily precede, and the aggregates of karma instigated by those afflictions arise and occur.

One should pay attention. Although one has practiced selflessness and emptiness from the very beginning, the initial boundary for directly knowing and realizing them appears at the path of seeing. The reasons for preventing those are not mentioned for now, but should be understood elsewhere. Holding moral discipline and asceticism as supreme, having inverted views of one's own aggregates, and harboring doubt and uncertainty, these three fetters are those of a middling person, know that they are like closing the city gates. The three fetters to be abandoned by seeing are holding moral discipline and asceticism as supreme, as well as the view of the perishable collection and doubt. Moral discipline is mainly known within one's own Buddhist tradition, and asceticism is mainly known among non-Buddhists. Or, from the perspective of abandoning what is to be abandoned, it is moral discipline, and from the perspective of accomplishing what is to be accomplished, it is also asceticism. That is to say, what need is there to mention that non-Buddhists show the five fires, jump from mountains, and regard liberation as perverse asceticism such as the asceticism of wild animals? Although the moral discipline of abandoning evil and doing good with body and speech is present, without the thought of renunciation and correct wisdom, merely thinking that liberation is achieved through moral discipline alone is holding moral discipline as supreme. 'Body' does not refer to the aggregates of the body, nor does it refer to the body among body, speech, and mind, but rather 'body' is established as nature, therefore, the view of the perishable collection of grasping one's own nature as an inverted self, and doubt, here refers to doubting the meaning of the four noble truths, that is, from the cause of the origin of suffering, the result of suffering arises, and from the cause of the path, one obtains the result of the cessation of suffering, Nirvana, and doubts arise in the mind. These three fetters are like closing the city gates of liberation, and one should know that they are the main defilements that hinder hearing, therefore one must diligently abandon them. Although the defilements to be abandoned by seeing are limitless, why are these three fetters specifically mentioned here? As it is said in the Treasury of Abhidharma: 'Not wanting to go on the road and wrong paths, Doubting the path, all of those, Can hinder the path to liberation, Therefore, three are taught in the sutras.' Thus, the view of the perishable collection is not wanting to walk the road, and holding moral discipline and asceticism as supreme is a wrong path.
