Even if various conceptual thoughts manifest, one should not discriminate the timing but diligently pacify them. Then, with a mind of diligence, along with manifest effort of focusing on one point, to whatever extent dullness and agitation are abandoned, to that extent one should remain evenly, making the mind's continuum as one. From that, due to extreme familiarity, without effort or manifest effort, naturally abiding is abiding. The meaning of the words of the previously mentioned scriptural authority is temporarily set aside for the purpose of illustration. Secondly, the five faults of samadhi are: laziness and instruction, forgetfulness, dullness and agitation, non-effort and effort, these are considered as five faults. And, the eight efforts to abandon these are: place and abiding in it, cause and effect itself. These are the first four. Not forgetting the object, perceiving dullness and agitation, abandoning their manifest effort, and abiding naturally when peaceful. These are the latter four. The meaning of this is: Mahāravaka Kamalaśīla said: In short, there are six faults of samadhi, namely laziness, forgetting the object, dullness, agitation, non-exertion, and exertion. The antidotes to these are also abandoned by the eight efforts of abandonment. Like this: faith, desire, diligence, extreme pliancy, mindfulness, awareness, attention, and equanimity. Among them, the first four are the antidotes to laziness, like this, those yogis of faith who fully believe in the qualities of samadhi and possess the characteristics, generate desire. Then, initiate the diligence of desire. That, by the power of diligence, makes the body and mind serviceable. Then, the body and mind become extremely pliant, thereby dispelling laziness. Therefore, faith and so on are cultivated in order to abandon laziness. Mindfulness is the antidote to forgetting the object. Awareness is the antidote to dullness and agitation, because it can correctly perceive dullness and agitation. When dullness and agitation have not been completely pacified, non-exertion is a fault, therefore cultivate attention as its antidote. When dullness and agitation are completely pacified, when the mind abides naturally, exertion is a fault, therefore

Equanimity. Having those eight abandoning activities is entering very deep samadhi. As stated in the Stages of Meditation. For this, the cause of diligence is faith, the basis or place is desire, abiding in it is diligence, and the result of diligence is extreme pliancy. The first four methods of settling the mind should be combined with the stages in order. The object is stated as: mindfulness is the antidote to wandering from conceptualization, and awareness is needed during taming and pacifying. Vigilance knows when there is sinking and excitement, therefore, vigilance is the antidote to sinking and excitement, making the mind unserviceable, and it is extremely pacifying. Attention is needed when making the mind one-pointed. Why is attention the antidote to non-exertion? Because non-exertion is non-exertion in one-pointedness, which can be found during sinking and excitement. Attention is: As it is said, what is attention? It is manifest activity, the action of the mind, which is the action of the mind entering into virtuous, non-virtuous, and neutral things. As it is said. Here, too, just as iron follows a magnet, the mind goes to one-pointedness in samadhi. Equanimity is the natural abiding of the mind when abiding in equality, and exertion is a fault. Therefore, one should meditate on the antidote to being disturbed by conceptualization. These stages of meditation have been briefly explained. Now I will say a little about how to cultivate insight. As it is said, after such calm abiding is accomplished, according to the Dharma Abhidhamma, again, relying on calm abiding and insight, they become four paths. Some have attained calm abiding, but have not attained insight, so they rely on calm abiding and strive for insight. Some have attained insight, but have not attained calm abiding, so they rely on insight and strive for calm abiding. Some have not attained calm abiding, nor have they attained insight, so they strive for both with the mind of refuting opponents and completely destroying them. Some have attained both calm abiding and insight, and their calm abiding and insight have become mixed and equally yoked.
