That is to say, when ignorance is predominant, there is sinking; when desire is predominant, there is excitement; and anger is also known to be of the same kind. These are eliminated by meditating on dependent origination, love, and ugliness in order. In short, to abandon sinking and excitement and to accomplish the continuity of the mind being one-pointed, joy is generated for sinking, and excitement is eliminated by contemplating ugliness, etc. As it is said: "When, in the meantime, desire, etc., cause the mind to wander outward, at that time, know that the mind has wandered, and pacify the wandering by meditating on ugliness, etc., and quickly cause the Bodhi mind to abide inward." It is also said: "If one is oppressed by sleep and drowsiness, and the object of focus is not clear, and the mind becomes sinking, at that time, contemplate the appearance of light, and remember the qualities of the most beloved object, such as the Buddha, etc., and thereby eliminate the sinking, and firmly hold the object of focus." Thus it is said. The mind is like a door shut, without the wind of conceptual thoughts shaking it. This means that from there, when one is free from both sinking and excitement, one abides in equality, and when one sees the mind arising naturally, one relaxes effort and maintains equanimity. Thus it is said, after being free from sinking and excitement, like a door shut, one makes the mind abide without wavering, abiding for a long time, this is called equipoise, which is the accomplishment of calm abiding. The benefits are: one is not moved by desires, and one obtains bliss through extreme habituation. That is to say, first, it is through the mind that has accomplished calm abiding, and second, the bliss of the body is more important, so that is the meaning of the words. So, what are the nine methods of abiding the mind, and the eight applications of abandonment? First, in the Ornament of the Lord, it says: "The mind, with respect to the object of focus, should never be allowed to wander. Having recognized the wandering quickly, one should again return it to the object of focus. The wise person, even from above, should gather the mind back. From there, in order to see the qualities, one tames the mind in Samadhi. In order to see the faults of wandering, one dislikes it and pacifies it. Arrogance, unpleasantness, etc., are also pacified in the same way. From there, restrain"

For the diligent, the mind is manifestly fabricated, obtaining its own arising, that does not gather from footsteps. These and other words, and also in the holy Dharma Compendium of Abhidharma, it is said: What is tranquility? It is like this: placing the mind on one's own inner self, constantly placing it, reversing and placing it, closely placing it, taming it, pacifying it, extremely pacifying it, making it one-pointed, and placing it equally. Thus it is said. The meaning of this is: In the Meditation Sequence of the Nature of the Great Bodhisattva Lotus, it says: Therein, what is called 'placing' is attaching the mind to the object. What is called 'constantly placing' is constantly placing it on that very object. What is called 'reversing and placing' is knowing the distraction and abandoning it. What is called 'closely placing' is abandoning the distraction and continuously placing it on that very object. What is called 'taming' is generating joy. What is called 'pacifying' is seeing the fault of distraction and pacifying it greatly without joy. What is called 'extremely pacifying' is completely eliminating the arising of dullness and sleep, etc. What is called 'making it one-pointed' is striving to enter without manifest fabrication. What is called 'equally placing' is turning to equanimity when it becomes mind, which is a synonym for equally holding. The meanings of these words, these are what the noble Maitreya and the previous abbots said. Thus it is said, initially focusing the mind one-pointedly on the object and placing it, temporarily on that very first place where the mind is placed, naturally placing it equally, and constantly placing it by letting it wander only on the object, if the mind is distracted, then recognizing that and again Placing it equally is reversing and placing it. In order to prevent the mind from scattering outward, initially possessing mindfulness and abandoning distraction and placing it is closely placing it. Viewing the benefits of samadhi, etc., and the fault of the cause of distraction, sensual pleasures, not letting the mind scatter is taming it, viewing the cause of the mind's disturbance and non-abiding, distraction, as a fault, abandoning the displeasure of placing the mind equally and placing it equally is pacifying it, forgetting the object and scattering from it to another and sinking and excitement.
