"Deceive us and give us milk as medicine." All the villagers angrily gathered before the king. The king said to them, "Do not scold me. Whether or not milk can be used as medicine should be judged by the doctor. I am not at fault." At that time, the great king and all the villagers were very happy and praised him. They showed even more respect and offered more to the doctor. When all the patients were given medicinal milk, their illnesses were cured. Bhikshus, you should also understand the Tathagata, the Arhat, the Perfectly Enlightened One, who is endowed with knowledge and conduct, the Sugata, the Knower of the World, the unsurpassed guide for those who need to be tamed, the teacher of gods and humans, the Buddha, the Bhagavan, in this way. Like a great doctor who comes into the world and subdues all the doctors with evil views, he says to all the kings, "I am a doctor." In order to subdue the non-Buddhists, he proclaims: No self (བདག་མེད།,anātman, अनात्मन्,no self). No person (གང་ཟག་མེད།,apudgala, अपुद्गल,no person). No sentient being (སེམས་ཅན་མེད།,asattva, असत्त्व,no sentient being). No life (འཚོ་བ་མེད།,ajīva, अजीव,no life). No strength (ཤེད་ཅན་མེད།,abala, अबल,no strength). No lord of strength (ཤེད་བདག་མེད།,abalasvāmin, अबलस्वामिन्,no lord of strength). No knowledge, no action, and no agent." The Buddha said this. Bhikshus, the "self" spoken of by the non-Buddhists is like the traces left by worms. Therefore, the Tathagata said that there is no self in the Buddha's teachings. This is to tame sentient beings and to know the time. Although it is thus proclaimed that there is no self, because there are causes and conditions, it is also proclaimed that there is a self. It is like a skilled doctor who knows whether or not milk can be used as medicine. It is not like the ignorant children who cling to a self. The self that ignorant children cling to is as big as a thumb, or as big as a mustard seed, or as big as a mote of dust. The "self" spoken of by the Tathagata is not like that. Although it is said that all dharmas are without self, in reality, there is no absence of self. The so-called "self" refers to the dharma that is true, correct, constant, abiding, autonomous, unchanging, and immutable. This is the "self." It is like that great doctor who is skilled in medicinal milk. The Tathagata is also like that, for each individual's

Because all dharmas truly possess a self, (the Buddha) said that you and the fourfold assembly should also diligently apply yourselves to all dharmas in that way. In the Sutra of the Great Compassion of the Tathagata, Requested by the King of Dharanis, it says: 'Son of good family, just as a skilled gem cutter who knows well the method of polishing gems. He takes an impure precious gem from among the various kinds of precious gems, soaks it in strong salt water, and then polishes it thoroughly with a hair brush. He does not abandon his effort at just that point, but then soaks it in strong food juice and polishes it thoroughly with a woolen cloth. He does not abandon his effort at just that point, but then soaks it in the juice of great medicine and polishes it thoroughly with thin gauze. Once it is completely polished and free from impurities, it is called a great vaidurya gem. Son of good family, in the same way, the Tathagata knows the realm of sentient beings who are not yet completely pure, and with words of aversion to impermanence, suffering, selflessness, and impurity, he causes beings who are attached to samsara to generate aversion, and thus introduces them to the Vinaya of the Noble Ones. But this is not the Tathagata abandoning his effort, and then with words of emptiness, signlessness, and wishlessness, he causes them to realize the state of the Tathagata. But this is not the Tathagata abandoning his effort, and then with words of the irreversible wheel of Dharma, words of the complete purification of the three wheels, he causes those sentient beings with various natures to enter the realm of the Tathagata.' Thus it is said. In the Great Nirvana Sutra, when speaking of the eight inversions, the sutra says: 'As you say, we also diligently apply ourselves to the notions of impermanence, suffering, and selflessness, but this is actually meaningless. Because there is no real meaning in these three diligences, I will explain three other diligences that are superior to these three non-diligences.' Regarding suffering, one should think of happiness.
