Although arising from its own nature, conditions do not always remain in oneself. Although all phenomena appear from the power of this mind, they are not one with it. This fault you speak of does not reside here, and we also refute it before the wisdom that discerns ultimate truth. You have overstated the case regarding the nature of cause and condition. Even at the time of the first dawn, all seeds are present, but the eye-consciousness arises because of attention. Because it arises, others cannot awaken. When attention is then directed towards sound, the power of the former diminishes and the latter is awakened. Many different things are placed inside a container; when one is taken out, all are taken out, and when one is destroyed, all are destroyed, and so on. Look at this transformation of your intellect. The all-ground consciousness exists, and for these such as attachment, the object-consciousness is the cause of consciousness other than the all-ground consciousness. It exists, but even when they gather, they do not arise, and sometimes we see them arising from it. Doing it in mind once a day is better than hearing it many times at once, because we see that it becomes especially clear, and so on. The ripening of habitual tendencies is thus established. Similarly, even if a single instance of definitive cognition arises, even without other conditions, if there is no contradiction, it is seen to become especially stable over a long period of time. Nourishing old habitual tendencies and new ones, both exist, and habitual tendencies are divided simultaneously. That power is from the second moment onwards. When anger is present, the mind also appears in its form, but it is not certain that it will follow after it. It is very strange that it does not remain when its form is clear, but leaves a seed when it declines. The cause and effect that generate the essence are sequential, but there is no certainty about generating differences and the basis. Because there are many aspects to the limits of the cause's existence, the lord of intelligence does not contradict this. Even though dissimilar types arise simultaneously, because a single, very clear mind diminishes their power, they do not arise from other than the all-ground consciousness. Non-existent things are powerless before, and do not approach closely afterwards, so all causes are pre-existent. This is also what generates the essence. Even if the afflicted mind ceases to exist, the co-emergent virtue of the perishable aggregate view will not arise, and there will be no difference between the two attainments. The constant stability of self-grasping will also be unreasonable. The sutra says: The afflicted mind is always.
