Ra 'gyur. The ālaya-vijñāna is the seed of all dharmas. Therefore, I have explained this ālaya-vijñāna to the noble ones. The receptive consciousness is profound and subtle. All seeds flow like a river. It is not appropriate to conceive of it as a self. I have not shown this to children. The essence of the Tathāgata is also endowed with the seven consciousnesses. The two apprehensions enter well, and are reversed by complete knowledge. The mind is naturally clear, and what makes it turbid is the mind. The mind, together with the consciousnesses, constantly plants habitual tendencies. Habitual tendencies arising from the mind's consciousness should be seen as stains. The mind is like a white cloth, which is not beautiful because of the habitual tendencies. From the *Ghanavyūha Sūtra*: Just as the moon and the stars dwell together in the sky, so the consciousnesses and the ālaya dwell together in the body. Just as when milk is transformed, the qualities of yogurt and butter remain, so the ālaya-vijñāna, when transformed, remains like form. Other extensive explanations are given in the Mahāyāna sūtras. The sūtras known to all schools state that the ālaya is named as arising from one. The fundamental consciousness, according to the teachings of the Mahāsāṃghika school, and as long as saṃsāra exists, the aggregates according to the Haimavata school, the vipāka-vijñāna according to the Sarvāstivāda school, the bhavaṅga-vijñāna, a limb of existence, according to the Sthavira school, and so on, there are many teachings in the Hīnayāna and Mahāyāna. The noble Nāgārjuna also said: Likewise, the ālaya-vijñāna is like a falsehood that seems true. It is agitated by going and coming, and constantly takes the three realms. The ālaya exists because habitual tendencies reside there. There is no ālaya other than the establishment of habitual tendencies. If that exists, then that itself is accomplished. Why should the wise argue over mere names? However, it is not reasonable to admit it to others. Show what harms the nonexistent and what establishes the existent. It is not reasonable for seeds to arise without a place to reside. If they arise, then even an arhat would become that. If there is no afflicted mind, then there is no ālaya, because the six aggregates are unstable and constantly interrupted. At the time of the sense faculties, with and without form, and the realms, to plant the seeds of consciousness as unwanted inanimate objects would be too extreme. The consciousness of *mer mer po* is not the mind, the three times

Uncompounded things and the like cannot be visualized. If there is no mind, then the conditions are not complete. In fainting, samadhi, and deep sleep, if there is consciousness, then it is established that this exists. In sleep and fainting, the absence of consciousness is directly contradictory. Even if the body is cut off when there is no consciousness, there will be no sin. Others also have consciousness because they wake up. Life is the union of mind and body, and there is nothing other than a small part of the sense consciousness. Mind consciousness is not dependent on form, so it is said. The consciousness that awakens from a state of mindlessness will not have a proximate cause if there is no alaya consciousness. It is not the consciousness at the time of the initial entry, because it has ceased and is interrupted by other times. It is not the same as the previous and subsequent moments, just as fire burns without interruption, and hearing and the like are not forgotten without interruption. If the mind ceases due to the power of fainting and other occurrences, then it will be born from the power of other occurrences, and the essence of the mind will become the agent of occurrence. Therefore, mindlessness is a transformation of the mind. Since there are no six consciousnesses, it is not other than the alaya consciousness. Without this, karma and its results will not be possible, because karma ceases immediately after it is done. If the seed has nowhere to stay, how can one experience the fruit? Samadhi cannot arise from the mind of desire. Without this, how can the seed grow if it has nowhere to stay? The paths of the world and beyond are the same. Some say that the alaya consciousness is the same as Brahma or Ishvara. It is said in the scriptures that Ishvara is the creator, and this mind is also established as Ishvara, so it can also be considered the same as them. But it is not exactly the same. Ishvara is a permanent substance, the creator is the collection of body and mind, and sentient beings are permanent. This (alaya consciousness) is clear, aware, impermanent, and has habits, and it is not caused by one's own will, so there is a big difference. Because it has all the seeds, the fruit, and all appearances will always appear. All refers to the category, otherwise they will each have them. For these differences such as separation, there is no need for separate habit seeds. Even if there are habits, they will gradually appear due to conditions. Some think that the condition must always exist, because it has all the habits. There is also another second condition there, but the seed alone does not appear, but the attention that arises from itself makes it appear. Conditions and other causes are the reason
