are obstacles that can arise in the continuum of sentient beings. If summarized, they are the five: lack of faith, lack of diligence, attachment, arrogance, and wrong path. The first two are included in lack of faith, the next two are lack of diligence. Thus, these two, along with attachment and arrogance, are the four actions related to afflictions, and regret and uncertainty of turning back are combined into one, called the fault of the wrong path. These two, although relying on the side of the antidote, have turned from the antidote into a fault. The first two and attachment obstruct entering the Dharma, being content with little and regret obstruct what has already been entered, laziness and arrogance obstruct both, and the last obstructs attaining the supreme fruit. The second is its antidote, etc. The antidote to these is all the Dharma of the three vehicles, but with the supreme Mahayana teachings, its antidote becomes unsurpassed. In its order, these eight obstacles can completely eliminate all faults from the root. The method of elimination is as stated in the explanations mentioned earlier, and my thought is this: This also needs to be understood in conjunction with the general characteristics of Mahayana Buddhism. In the Shravaka Vehicle, starting from the difference of what the Buddha has abandoned, it speaks of the state of being without attachment, anger, etc., and starting from the difference of the cause, it speaks of performing countless austerities for the benefit of others, etc., which are the conduct of only noble beings, and are qualities that are not possessed by Vishnu and fierce deities, etc. Therefore, although most will take refuge in the Buddha, because the infinite transformations and the doctrine of knowing everything are not widely proclaimed, it may be thought that the difference between transformation and freedom is even more superior than the Buddha. In the Mahayana, because the body, wisdom, qualities, pure lands, wealth, and infinite activities of the Tathagata are widely and clearly shown, the qualities of those other teachers, even if gathered together at the same time in hundreds of thousands of kotis, are only like a cow's hoofprint filled with impure water, while the greatness of the Bhagavan is the nectar of…

It is as unfathomable as the ocean. Thus, one will come to know. From the teachings of the Hearers' Vehicle, even the paths and individuals taught therein mostly overcome the doctrines of the Tirthikas, but sometimes, upon hearing that "the Vedas and so on are the cause of liberation through hearing," doubts may arise, thinking, "That might be better than this." In the Great Vehicle, however, the differences in view, conduct, meditation, and result are taught, and all causes and effects are shown to be excellent and vast. Merely hearing the Dharma, and even just having the scriptures present in a certain place, are said to have limitless benefits, thus giving rise to incomparable reverence for the Dharma. In the Hearers' Vehicle, the teaching that samsara is merely a mistaken appearance is rare and unclear, whereas in the Great Vehicle it is extremely clear and extensive. Therefore, one understands that abandoning samsara is not difficult, and great compassion for sentient beings increases especially. In order to liberate them, one is able to give up even one's body and life without hesitation. Therefore, one applies oneself to diligence, which is the best antidote to laziness. Merely by extensively teaching emptiness and compassion, one also eliminates some clinging to rituals. Because one abandons obscurations that are without inherent existence, and accumulates merit and engages in practice with non-inherent existence, there is no difference in the difficulty of practice based on the length of time or the amount. For example, a magician can conjure a day in an instant, or show it for many years, without needing to wait for differences in length of time, etc. Also, just as there is no difference in wealth between dreaming of enjoying the wealth of Indra and dreaming of doing the work of a shepherd in a dream during an hour of sleep, similarly, with compassion, following the different inclinations of sentient beings requires realizing all the Dharma and possessing all qualities. From the Lesser Vehicle: "Those who speak much are not holders of the true Dharma; those who have heard little of this, but have directly realized the Dharma of the body." Thus it is said, and it is not necessary to endlessly increase qualities merely to liberate oneself alone from samsara. Therefore, one cannot eliminate all clinging to the idea that a little is enough. The Hearers' Vehicle also teaches renunciation to counter desire and the realm of
