Commentary on a Single Verse Commentary on a Single Verse Commentary on a Single Verse Exists. Oṃ Svasti. Homage to the Buddha! This sutra of a single verse, formerly the Victorious, the Perfectly Complete Buddha named Star King, having entered the fire element samadhi, remained in meditative absorption. Our teacher, who became known as the Brahmin Non-Giver, developed great faith and stood with only one foot planted on the ground. With this single verse, he praised continuously for seven days, thus perfecting the perfection of diligence. It is said that the Teacher himself repeated those words again. The term "Supreme Being" refers to the assembly of ordinary beings and noble beings. Because he is the chief, the guide, and the pathfinder for them, he is the supreme one, the Perfectly Complete Buddha. As for "like you," there is no need to mention surpassing you, there is no other even equal to you. As for "cherishing other great renunciates," a renunciate is one who has gone forth. If there is no renunciate equal to you, what need is there to mention a householder equal to you? This is the intended meaning. Thus, the gods such as the Powerful One and the All-Pervading One, the renunciates such as Kapila, and the Brahmins such as the Expansive One, those who are powerful, mighty, renowned as great beings, and worthy of worship by worldly people, because they rely on wrong views and bad conduct, are not even equal to the Buddha's Shravaka disciples, how could they be compared to the Buddha himself? This is the meaning. Or one might wonder, are there not other Tathagatas residing? In the ultimate sense, all Tathagatas are of the same essence, and do not become separate others. But according to the appearance to ordinary worldly people, the Buddhas of the past were not visible at that time, and they appear in common to those with impure eyes of wisdom. In a single world realm, two supreme emanations of the Tathagata do not appear simultaneously, this is the intended meaning. Shravaka

As many schools believe, it is not the case that two Buddhas do not appear simultaneously in different realms of the world, as they suppose. Even according to the views of the eighteen schools, the Dharmakayas of the Buddhas are the same, and because their intentions converge on one goal, they are not included among other ascetics. "The land of the gods" refers to the lands of the Four Great Kings and the gods of the Thirty-three, who rely on Mount Meru and other landmasses. Because great high-ranking deities reside near Indra, it dispels the doubt of whether they are in the Thirty-three Heavens. "In this world" refers to this human world, Jambudvipa. It is the place where the most powerful ascetics and Brahmins accomplish special qualities. The abode of Vaishravana is the grove of willows, and it is specifically mentioned because alchemists, accomplished substances, and great holders of mantras reside there. By mentioning it, the other three guardians of the world are also implicitly understood. "The supreme abode of the divine palace" refers to the palaces that move in the sky, such as the moon and the sun, which rely on the earth, and all the abodes of the gods up to the Abode of Non-Conflict, which exist like clouds in the sky. The sun, moon, stars, and so on are mentioned because they are known in the world as the makers of happiness and suffering for humans and animals, influencing the good and bad of the year, and the occurrence and elimination of diseases. The Abode of Non-Conflict and so on are mentioned because the greatest gods reside there. "Directions and intermediate directions" refers to the four directions of Mount Meru, the abodes of the Four Great Kings, and the areas between the peaks, where Vajrapani Yakshas and their abodes are located. Alternatively, they refer to the islands between the directions and intermediate directions, the twelve islands. Or, in another way, it refers to the abodes of the eight protectors of the directions, such as Indra and Agni, in the surrounding environment, relying on the surrounding mountains. These are known as the makers of the rise and fall of the world, and powerful beings such as Gandharvas and sages reside there, as well as the ascetics and Brahmins who arise from their lineages and depend on them.
