Thus it is. They practice this asceticism for the sake of liberation, also because they believe in the existence of a mind. Furthermore, if we consider the views established by the philosophical schools, then, regarding just "sentient being" and "person," this is how it is known among our own Buddhist followers; while "life" is mainly proclaimed by the naked ascetics and others; "self" is mainly proclaimed by the proponents of Ishvara; and "I" is proclaimed by all non-Buddhists. Among these, the meaning of sentient being is the one who thinks. But this is not the case, for if the mind exists apart from thinking, then the mind that is not thinking exists mutually with thinking. Since one cannot see the action of the other, the mind cannot think about the object of the mind. If it exists as cause and effect, then when one exists, the other does not, so how can the mind think? If the essence is the same, then the mind and thinking are impermanent, so the mind will also become impermanent. Therefore, it cannot be established by its own essence. Here, "mind" refers to the general name of consciousness that follows the object when thinking, but it is not just referring to the mental factor of attention. What is this thing called "life"? It cannot be the same as "self," because life has birth and death, but self is not allowed to have birth and death. If it is different, then like the limbs of the body, life cannot be that itself, nor is it to be cherished. "Life is lifespan, warmth, and the basis of consciousness." Even according to the views of the Hearers' school, it is not reasonable. If the place on which consciousness depends is life, then there is nothing other than the body or mind. If merely the cause of the arising and abiding of consciousness is called dependence, then it does not go beyond the four conditions of objective condition, dominant condition, causal condition, and immediate condition. However, none of these are life, nor can they be the basis of karmic results. Warmth and the place of warmth cannot be other than the body. Lifespan also cannot be determined apart from the state of body and mind. Therefore, the so-called "life" is merely a designation. The so-called "person" refers to which of the causes or actions, in another state, experiences the result in the manner of
