The twelve branches. Among them, ignorance refers to: the mind that is ignorant and does not know what should be known, a state where knowledge is unclear. Regarding the meaning of the Four Noble Truths or the cause-and-effect of dependent origination, it is like an object in the dark, or something behind a mountain, a conceptual thought that cannot perceive even a little. That is, there are two types of ignorance: ignorance of reality and ignorance of karmic results. The latter is a mental factor that does not know that virtuous and non-virtuous actions produce the fruits of happiness and suffering. The former has three types: ignorance of the characteristics of the Four Noble Truths such as impermanence, suffering, and selflessness; ignorance of emptiness free from elaboration; and ignorance of the place of the Tathagatagarbha. Among these, ignorance of karmic results causes the projection of non-virtuous actions; ignorance of the reality of the Four Noble Truths causes the projection of both virtuous and non-virtuous actions that lead to birth in the three realms of samsara; ignorance of freedom from elaboration, although transcending the three realms, does not transform into a body of wisdom, and causes the accomplishment of an inferior mind-body, as well as uncontaminated actions that accomplish the body of samadhi, and intermediate actions. Ignorance of the place of the Tathagatagarbha is the ground of ignorance and habitual tendencies, and even causes the projection of uncontaminated actions that accomplish the three aspects of the body of wisdom and the mind-body. In general, these are also because the former exists, the latter must necessarily exist with it, therefore ignorance of the Tathagatagarbha causes the projection of all of these, and ignorance of freedom from elaboration causes all actions except for the action of the mind-body. From "ignorance of freedom from elaboration causes all actions except for the action of the mind-body" to "ignorance of karmic results only causes the projection of non-virtuous actions" can be inferred. Then, isn't the branch of ignorance the view of the perishable collection that grasps at self and what belongs to self, as held by the noble Nagarjuna and the glorious Dharmakirti and others? Why is it not considered so in the ultimate sense? Although ignorance and the view of the perishable collection are different in essence, the ignorance that causes the projection of the three realms only arises in connection with the view of the perishable collection. Because the form of ignorance is not clear, it is not spoken of from that aspect, but because the form of the view of the perishable collection is clear and easy to recognize, it is spoken of from that aspect. For example, the seed of a certain child

If it becomes difficult to understand the lineage of caste and ancestry, then starting from clothes with obvious signs, without mentioning caste and ancestry, such as calling them "Red Boy" and "Yellow Boy." The Ratnavali says, "If there is self-grasping, there is also karma, and from that, birth again occurs." This means that self-grasping and other afflictions accumulate karma, or that having self-grasping can accumulate new karma that leads to samsara. But this does not mean that self-grasping is a branch of ignorance. The noble Nagarjuna did not explicitly say that ignorance is self-grasping, and this view that the branch of ignorance must have self-grasping as a companion is only spoken of from the perspective of samsara in the three realms, which is a common view with the two Hearer schools. In the uncommon context of the Mahayana, for the twelve links of dependent origination of how samsara enters into complete accordance with transcendence of the three realms and purification, the branches of ignorance—delusion about freedom from elaboration and the essence—still exist even for those who have abandoned the seeds of the view of the perishable aggregate. Therefore, to consider identifying ignorance with the view of the perishable aggregate as a profound difference is like considering identifying food with leftovers as a profound difference. One should understand that this is a misunderstanding of the profound way. Thus, relying on ignorance, there will arise actions belonging to the three of body, speech, and mind, that is, the karma of action that accumulates any of the three types of karma: merit, non-merit, and immovability. Because of ignorance, karma is initiated and created, and immediately after creation, it becomes the habit and seed of that karma in the alaya consciousness. By the power of this, the six consciousnesses also have the ability to be defiled by that habit. The changing consciousness at the time of accumulating karma and in the intermediate state is the branch of consciousness. When it has just taken birth in the womb, the four aggregates of feeling, perception, volition, and consciousness are the aggregate of name, and the elements and derived elements in the stages of nur-nur-po etc. are the aggregate of form, which is the branch of name and form. From the growth of these, the six sense bases such as the eye arise, which is the branch of the six sense bases. After being born from the womb, the six faculties, the six objects, and consciousness
