For cyclic existence, too, there is no existence; for impermanence, too, there is no cyclic existence. You, the supreme of reason, have said that cyclic existence is like a dream. Suffering is done by oneself, or done by others, or done by both. Some conceive of it as without a cause, but you have spoken of dependent arising. Whatever arises dependently, you consider that to be emptiness. Things do not have self-governance, this is the lion's roar of you, the incomparable one. In order to abandon all conceptual elaborations, you revealed the nectar of emptiness; whoever clings to it, you severely rebuke. Thus it is said that this cyclic existence in the six realms by means of the three, karma, afflictions, and suffering, is reasonable for that which is without inherent existence, like an illusion, but it is unreasonable for that which is established by its own nature. Permanence cannot be cyclic, for if the realm of the gods were permanent, then it would be impossible for hells and so forth to cyclically exist and go, and if the state of the causes of karma and afflictions were permanent, then it would remain in just that state, and it would be impossible to cyclically exist and dwell in the state of the result of suffering. Impermanence, too, does not cyclically exist and go, for impermanence is something that has already passed away in each instant, so from the second instant onwards, there is no one who cyclically exists and goes. These phenomena, such as the aggregates, are also not reasonable as the nature of cyclic existence, for by their own nature, they are neither permanent nor impermanent. If they were permanent, then earlier and later would be the same, and they would become one, and if they were impermanent, then earlier and later would be different, and they would become many. Since they are separate from one and many, permanence and impermanence are also unreasonable. If cyclic existence existed in some state, then it would be impossible for the Buddhas not to see it, but since it does not exist, they do not actually see it, but they know it like those with clairvoyance see the dreams of others. This suffering of the aggregates of appropriation, too, some consider to be done by oneself, such as the Samkhyas and so forth, and others consider it to arise from something else by its own nature, such as the Hearers, the Mind-Only school, and most other non-Buddhists, and the naked ascetics say that it arises from both, and those who consider it to be without a cause are those who say that nature is the cause. The reasoning that refutes these has already been explained above, and causelessness also contradicts direct perception. Furthermore, when a god is transformed into a human, he accumulates karma, and when he is transformed into a hell-being, he experiences the results.

Whatever suffering is, if it is done by me, then karma will be accumulated on the basis of hell, and hell and humans will also become one. Also, experiencing the suffering of hell on the basis of humans will become a fault of permanence. If it is done by others by nature, then others' suffering will be experienced by others who have accumulated karma, so it will befall encountering what has not been done. If it is done by both, then it will befall both. If suffering has no cause, then it is also unreasonable to avert it by means of elimination. Although these four extremes are not permissible, in the face of consciousness that has not been examined by intelligence, it arises only from interdependence where many causes and conditions have gathered. These twelve links of interdependence are also not the same as what is accepted by the Hearer Vehicle schools, because they arise from interdependence. There is no nature of arising, and there is no nature of abiding, so know it to be empty. These things are only under the control of causes and conditions, without self-sufficiency or autonomy, but are merely imputed in dependence on others. Although the distinctions of interdependence and emptiness are understood in this way, clinging tightly to them and being arrogant in considering oneself superior is like a god falling into a demon, which is extremely shameful. What is called clinging to emptiness as a real entity is the examination of the scope of understanding of the distinctions of emptiness, mistaking it for the reality. Thinking about it in this way becomes poison during the actual time of meditative equipoise. Because it shows that the suffering of samsara has a cause and is without inherent existence, therefore, for the Dharma realm, even when sentient beings of the ten directions and three times wander in samsara, they are never stained by the defilements of samsara. The absence of defilement is what is explained in detail. Like this also: 'Form, other-powered, emptiness itself, like illusion, arising from conditions, protector, you have made the non-existence of all dharmas habitual.' That is to say, form, which is the completely imputed, and other-powered, which is the consciousness with deluded appearances together with objects, all of which are empty and do not exist by their own nature like illusion, should be meditated upon in the subsequent attainment. And in meditative equipoise, by becoming accustomed to the non-existence of things, that is, the meaning of the perfectly established, the nature of all dharmas naturally abides in the reality, and delusion is dispelled.
