If one also considers the fruit of fragrance and the elements of earth, water, fire, and wind as tangible, then one should not consider them to be self-established. Because from the elements that are not objects of the eye, it is impossible for the form aggregate, which is the fruit and an object of the eye, to arise, since form and tangible objects are distinct entities that are not self-established. Furthermore, color and shape are not self-established by their own nature, because they depend on the elements as causes. This is the reason of dependent origination. Feeling is also not self-established, because feelings such as pleasure and pain depend on agreeable and disagreeable objects. The aggregate of recognition is the nature of grasping at signs, and signs are the nature of grasping at a mixture of name and meaning. If name and meaning are not different entities but the same entity, then saying the word "fire" would burn the speaker's mouth. If it is established as a different entity by its own nature, then meaning cannot be understood from the name, because if the nature is different, there is no connection. This belongs to the intellect of neither one nor many. Names and meanings are not self-established, because they are neither self-identical nor self-different, like an image. This is the root formulation. Its proof of establishment is what was stated above. The act of doing this is karma, and the object desired by the agent, the person, is called karma. It is said that the person also manifests the action of creating meritorious karma, as well as non-meritorious karma and unwavering karma, so what is said is only shown in name, but in terms of ultimate truth, it is not so. Karma is not self-established, because it depends on the agent. Just as someone without a father cannot become a son. If one thinks that because there is an agent, there is also karma, then the agent is not self-established, because without karma, the agent is unreasonable, just as without crops, there would be no harvester. Thus, karma and the agent are mutually dependent, so neither is established. However, in the appearance of illusion and in conceptual thought, karma and the agent exist. This is merely dependent origination, not a self-established agent.

There is no agent, and the agent does not enjoy the fruit, nor is there any accumulation of merit, etc. The action and the agent are also not established by their own nature, because they arise from the interdependence of causes and conditions, like an illusion. As it is said: Whatever is born from conditions is unborn. It does not have the nature of being born. Whatever depends on conditions should be seen as empty. Whoever understands emptiness is mindful. If consciousness does not exist, then the object of knowledge will not be established either. If eye consciousness does not exist at all, then form will completely disappear, because the object seen by the eye cannot exist. Similarly, if consciousness, that is, eye consciousness, is not truly established, then the object of knowledge, form, is also not truly existent. If form does not exist at all, then the arising of eye consciousness is impossible. If form is not truly established, then the eye consciousness that sees it is also not truly established, because consciousness depends on the condition of the object. Therefore, eye consciousness is not established by its own nature, because it must depend on form to arise. Form is also not established by its own nature, because it must depend on the seeing of eye consciousness to be considered form. Neither is true, because they depend on each other. Therefore, the aggregates are like illusions, dreams, mirages, and cities of gandharvas, appearing but without inherent existence. As it says in the Ornament of Beautiful Array Sutra: In this, there are no elements whatsoever, the five aggregates and consciousness as well, name and form are the causes, and the minds of sentient beings are also like that. Just as fire depends on the power of wood, it burns but does not think of burning, so the aggregates are like an empty wooden horse, why not enter into yoga? Like deer thirsting and seeking fragrance, and in the city of gandharvas, seeing deer calves and other things, but being deluded by untrue views. Like the mind arising from objects, turning like a magnet, in which there is nothing real, earth, water, fire, wind, moving, warm, wet, and hard, those who thirst always think. If the great elements arise from the mind, why not enter into yoga? As long as the body exists without being destroyed, and as long as wisdom arises, in between practice
