The essence of such departed ones always exists in the nature of reality. Although the conventional and ultimate are not generator and generated, if there were something without the ultimate, no sentient being would have any conventional appearance. The conventional seen by sentient beings and the unseen ultimate are not of the same entity. Although the conventional does not have its own characteristics, the ultimate does not become without its own characteristics. Although the characteristics of the conventional are not established in the ultimate, the ultimate does not become non-existent. When analyzing forms, etc., if the characteristics of forms, etc., are not established, then forms, etc., are not established by nature. However, something that is not forms, etc., does not have the characteristics of forms, etc., so it does not become unestablished by nature. For example, if what appears as a cow does not have the characteristics of a cow, then what appears as a cow becomes the reason for being an illusion. However, if what appears as a person does not have the characteristics of a cow, that reason does not make the person non-existent. Therefore, if any conventional dharma is established by its own nature, it will become the self of dharma. The way it is established by nature and the way the ultimate is established by its own nature are different in terms of the focus of the mind that is established by nature. Because the way it is established by nature is different, the selflessness of dharma and being truly established by its own nature are not contradictory. For example, if a cow is established by its own characteristics, it must have dewlaps and a tail. However, if a person is established by his own characteristics, he does not necessarily need to have dewlaps and a tail. Similarly, if the conventional is established by its own characteristics, it must be established as it appears to consciousness and as it is grasped by discrimination. However, if the ultimate is established by its own nature, it does not need to be established as it appears to consciousness and discrimination. Therefore, if the conventional exists, it must exist as either one or many. However, something that is neither one nor many cannot be an object of consciousness and thought. Whatever becomes conventional is established only by knowledge and thought, and it is definitely only an object of knowledge and thought. Although the ultimate transcends one and many, it is not an object of consciousness and realization, so there is no fault. Because it is not an object of knowledge and thought and is not established by knowledge and thought, the two, one and many, are not contradictory.
