In a hermitage on the outskirts of a city called Lai, he practiced for three years. Then he went to the land of Oddiyana in the west, where he stayed for about three years. Once, by a riverbank, six prostitutes were bathing. Somehow, they went behind a wall. He wondered what they were saying and listened. It turned out they were telling each other six pith instructions for reversing obstacles in the manner of conversation. He also saw many similar wondrous sights. The Vajra Dakinis became his friends, and his wisdom grew more and more, but he had not realized the true nature. He was always thinking of a teacher who could reveal the true nature. Then, he came to the door of a tavern, and the tavern woman transformed into the form of Vajrayogini. She said, "In a place in the east, there lives a teacher named Yeshe Shenyen (Wisdom Friend), who will grant you the desired siddhis." After that, the teacher gradually went east. He went to all the people in the city, and to all the places inside and outside, asking about Yeshe Shenyen, but no one could say anything. He went to the community of Tsarya and asked them, but no one else could say anything either. Once, an old yogi there said, "That was indeed a very powerful teacher of our Tsarya school, but we don't know where he has gone now, it has been many years." After that, he searched again and again. Once, in the shadow of a stupa near a forest village, he saw a person dressed as a monk and a householder lying there. He asked that person, "Have you seen Yeshe Shenyen?" That person said, "I know, I am also going to him. He is in the city of Tipura, east from here." He asked for guidance. That person said, "If you can carry these possessions of mine into this forest, I will tell you." So, he carried a heavy load and went with incense. That monk went ahead first. Shiwa Sangpo (Peaceful Hidden One) was caught by robbers on the way. The robbers opened the luggage and found only stones, and they were very angry and beat him again. When he fell to the ground like a corpse, that teacher appeared again, washed him with water, recited mantras, and miraculously revived him so that he could walk. When he arrived in Tipura, he asked for guidance to the lama, (and was told the lama was) by a lake.

After leading him there, an image of the Lama himself appeared, and he said, "This is the wisdom spiritual friend." He went as he was introduced, and a good samadhi arose. Then he said, "Please take me as a follower." (The Lama) said, "You are too rash. You say you want to be taken as a follower, but there is no gain or respect." After saying that, he became angry and beat him many times. There, he said to a wealthy householder, "If I work as your servant, how much will you pay me?" The man said, "I will give you one gold dinar for each day." He worked as his servant for a year. It is said that the farm laborers of India are very miserable. There, others also gave him many things, and he offered all of them to the teacher. Again, he followed the Lama, and once in a forest, there was a female buffalo tied with a nose rope. He said, "Lead this away." The Lama went ahead. After Zhiwa led it away, the owner chased after him and caught him. He beat him severely, and he fell to the ground like a corpse. The Lama came and revived him with skillful means. Another time, he entrusted the Lama's belongings, which resembled a grass hut, to someone to keep. The teacher and student went to the city and returned, and all the grass huts were burning fiercely. There, the Lama seemed very worried about his belongings, so (Zhiwa) asked, "Shall I take them out?" The Lama said, "Go." So he entered the fire without hesitation and took out the Lama's belongings. All his hands and feet were burned to the bone. His whole body also turned into blisters. Even if he died because of it, he thought it was for the sake of the Lama's belongings, and he did not have a moment of regret. It is said that the important belongings were nothing much, just a water pot, a coconut bowl, a wooden mandala plate, and a skull bowl. There, he thought he would surely die, but the Lama healed him with mantras and medicine before long. Then Zhiwa secretly thought, "It is not good that the teacher has used up medicine to heal this bad body of mine. From now on, doing many hardships for the sake of the teacher is only for my own benefit. Therefore, it is very inappropriate to receive mantras and medicine from the teacher. The teacher should not use me as a servant." He vowed. Again, the teacher wanted to go to the place of Rakhang, so he boarded a boat.
