He instructed: "In the east, there is a master named Tilopa. Go to him, and you will attain accomplishment." He urged him in this way. Naropa went to the east and searched everywhere for Tilopa, but he could not find him. Once, in a monastery, the monks gathered for a meal, and the door was locked from the inside. While Naropa was in the courtyard, a blue, dirty-looking man appeared and was roasting many live fish on a fire. Naropa could not stop him. Afterward, the monks came out and scolded him. The man said: "If you don't like it, I can put them back in the water." Then, he threw the cooked fish into the water, and the fish swam away. Naropa knew that he was an accomplished being, so he followed him, prostrated at his feet, and prayed to him. But he was angry and beat Naropa, not saying a single proper word. When Naropa thought, "Is he Tilopa?" he said, "Yes, yes." When Naropa thought, "Is he not Tilopa?" he said, "No, no." Naropa therefore knew that he had telepathy and that he was Tilopa. Sometimes he acted like a yogi, and sometimes he pretended to be crazy. But Naropa did not develop any doubts. Once, in Naropa's city, he took many vegetables from a wedding site and offered them to the master. The master seemed to be very fond of these vegetables. Naropa thought, "The master likes these vegetables." So he went back to the same place again. Because in India, it is not customary to visit someone's home twice in one day. He stole a container of vegetables and brought it back. People chased him, and many sticks and stones hit his body, but he did not drop the container and offered the vegetables to the master. Another time, in front of the master, there was a narrow waterway with many leeches and lotuses. The master was walking back and forth there. Naropa asked, "Shall I go into the middle of the water and make a bridge?" The master said, "Yes." Naropa did so. The master stepped on Naropa's head and jumped across. He said, "I will return soon, stay there." The master did not return for a long time. When the master returned, he came back the same way as before. At that time, the leeches sucked all the blood from Naropa's body, and he was about to die. Later, he gradually recovered and followed the master. On the way, he met a king's daughter named Doli being carried. Tilopa said, "This king's daughter is suitable for me."

He spoke some words. Naropa disguised himself as a Brahmin and did something like giving blessings. He placed a flower on the girl's head and forcefully dragged her away. The servants beat Naropa, making him unable to stand, and he fell to the ground like a corpse. Then, the master revived him with his magical powers. As they went on their way again, they encountered a minister's wife and a bride. He spoke as before and revived them as before. He thought that the master liked women, so he spent money to buy a high-caste girl from her parents, and Naropa himself married her, intending to offer her to the master the next day. That night, he enjoyed her himself. The next day, the master clamped Naropa's genitals between stones. There, he suffered greatly for many days. The master recited mantras and healed him. Later, the woman was offered to the master. Once, the girl looked at Naropa with disdain, and the master said, "You don't like me, but you like him." Then, he and Naropa were beaten together. These were all to test whether Naropa's faith was firm. As a result, Naropa not only did not lose faith, but his faith increased even more. Another time, the master and disciple were on top of a tall building. The master said, "If someone could jump down from here, I would be very happy." Naropa thought that the master would quickly revive me with his magical powers, so he jumped down, and as a result, all his limbs were broken. The master did not appear for many days. He thought that now there was only death. The master appeared and recited mantras to revive him. In this way, for twelve years, he served the master with unimaginable hardship, but the master did not even say a single good word. Later, in an empty plain, the master said, "Now I will impart the teachings and offer the mandala." Naropa said, "There is no water or flowers here." The master said, "Don't you have blood and fingers on your body?" So he cut open his veins and drew a mandala with blood, cut off his fingers, and arranged them in a pile. At this time, Tilopa collected Naropa's fingers and smeared mud and saliva on Naropa's face, and Naropa immediately fainted. When he woke up, he directly saw the suchness of all dharmas. His fingers were also restored. The master again bestowed upon him all the teachings and subsequent teachings. Naropa became the lord of yoga. Tilopa said, "Now you should not argue, and do not take disciples."
