Thus it was established. Once, in the land of Thogar, there was a king named Minar. All the inhabitants of that land worshiped the sky gods. Apart from that, they knew nothing, neither good nor evil. Whenever there was a festival, they would burn large quantities of grain, clothes, jewels, and fragrant wood, using the thick smoke to worship the sky. While they were performing the worship, the venerable Dhitika, accompanied by five hundred arhats, came from the sky and sat at the place of worship. They also thought that these were sky gods, so they prostrated at their feet and made extensive offerings. The venerable one taught them the Dharma, and the king and thousands of others saw the truth. Countless people took refuge in the Three Jewels and were established in the precepts. He stayed there for three summer months, and the number of monks also increased immeasurably. About a thousand also attained the state of arhat. After that, the road between that land and Kashmir (Khache) became very convenient, and many Kashmiri abbots came there, and the Dharma flourished greatly. Even during the time of that king and his son Imasha, there were about fifty large monasteries, filled with countless monks. Furthermore, in the eastern land of Kamarupa, there was a Brahmin named Siddha, whose wealth was comparable to that of a great king, and he was dedicated to worshiping the sun with thousands of followers. Once, while he was worshiping the sun, the venerable Dhitika manifested a miraculous appearance of coming from the center of the sun's mandala, radiating countless rays of light. He also thought that it was the sun, so he worshiped and prostrated, and when his faith became very strong, the venerable one revealed his own body. The venerable one again taught him the Dharma, and that Brahmin saw the truth and, with great faith, built a large monastery called the Great Stupa. There, he also held a grand festival for the monks from the four directions, thereby making the Dharma of the Buddha even more prosperous in the land of Kamarupa. At that time, in the western land of Malavan, there was a Brahmin named No Pride, who ruled the country without wearing a crown. Every day, he slaughtered thousands of goats and made fire offerings with their blood and flesh. The furnace he used for the fire offerings

They are also empty. Let all the Brahmin relatives of oneself also perform the fire sacrifice of Ajamedha in accordance with their respective wealth. Let those who are not Brahmins also accumulate the resources for offerings. When he wanted to perform the Gomedha, that is, the sacrifice of pure cows, he summoned the sage Bhrkukarakasa of the lineage of abandoning evil as the one who performs the sacrifice. He accumulated one hundred thousand pure white cows, and also summoned very many Brahmins. He also arranged many other items for giving. When he started to perform the fire sacrifice, the noble Dhitika came to the place of the sacrifice. There, he could not light the fire by any means. The cows could not be killed by any means, nor could they be injured. The Brahmins recited the Vedas and mantras, but no sound came out. There Bhrkukaraksa said: This obstacle to the success of the sacrifice is due to the power of this renunciate. There, when everyone threw stones, sticks, and ashes, they saw them turn into flowers and sandalwood powder. Those people, with faith, prostrated at the feet of the noble one and begged for forgiveness, and then asked: What command does the noble one give? The noble one said: O Brahmins, stop! What is the use of this evil sacrifice? Give alms! Accumulate merit! If I am a god of the Brahmin caste, and one who performs the work of fire, then what will happen by killing gods and parents? The flesh of cows is everywhere unclean, and Brahmins should not even touch it, how can the gods be satisfied? Sage, abandon this evil dharma! By craving for the food of meat, what will this fire sacrifice make you become? Showing healing through illusion is deceiving the world with mantras! Thus, he extensively taught the Dharma, and those people regretted their sinful deeds. Ashamed of their own actions, they lowered their heads and humbly asked for a way to pacify their sins. As the noble one taught the method, all those Brahmins took refuge and were established in the five precepts. In the place of the garden of the householder Gadhyana, they built a great temple and diligently practiced the seven kinds of merit arising from wealth. In this way, in that land, the teachings were especially propagated. At that time, King Ashoka was born.

That was not a long time ago. After that, gradually about five hundred Brahmins developed faith in the Three Jewels, and for a long time they fully maintained the Buddha's teachings and benefited sentient beings. Then, entrusting the teachings to the noble Black One, he passed into nirvana in the excellent land of Malava, the land of the Victorious King. This is the fifth story of the time of the noble Dhitika. At that time, King Ashoka was in his youth. His story is: belonging to the Tharu lineage, in a place called Champa Arna, a king of the solar race named Nemita, with five hundred ministers, ruled the northern lands with great wealth. He initially had six sons: Possessing Virtue, Possessing Chariot, Possessing Conch, Possessing Wealth, Possessing Lotus, and the sixth was Possessing Gold. At another time, a merchant's wife conceived after uniting with the king. One day, on the day the king was dispelling grief over his mother's death, the merchant's wife gave birth to a boy. Because this child was born on the day of dispelling grief, he was named Ashoka. When he grew up, he became very proficient in sixty arts, eight divinations, and writing and arithmetic, etc. On one occasion, in the midst of a crowd, the ministers asked a Brahmin diviner which of the king's sons would become king. The diviner replied: The one who eats the best food, wears the best clothes, and sits on the best seat. Then, two of the best ministers secretly inquired. The diviner said: The best food is rice, the best clothes are coarse cloth, and the best seat is a bow. Therefore, they knew that the other sons of the king possessed abundant wealth, while Ashoka enjoyed ordinary food and clothing, so he would become king. In the meantime, many mountain dwellers in Nepal and Kashmir and other places rebelled. To subdue them, Ashoka was sent with an army. Without difficulty, he defeated the mountain dwellers, collected taxes, captured prisoners, divided the land, and then offered them to the king. The king said: I am pleased with your intelligence, strength, and courage. I will give you whatever you want. He said: My side
