There are very many followers of Jaya, which means victor, one who is victorious over others, and one who is completely victorious. The manner in which the sculptors of images appeared is the forty-fourth (chapter). If this combination of words is well understood, then some who are called great scholars of Tibet will also think that Nagarjuna and others appeared immediately after the seven transmissions of the teacher. And they think that King Chandra appeared immediately after the death of King Ashoka. And the seven Chandras and the seven Palas, during the time of these fourteen generations of kings, all the scholars from Saraha to Abhayakara were completed. Because the time interval was very short, and fearing that the order of the scholars would be inconsistent, their respective lifespans were extended, and although the time interval seemed very long, those errors would disappear without basis. On what basis is this statement made? Although there are many compiled Dharma histories and scattered stories in Tibet, I have not seen one that is as orderly and complete as that. Apart from compiling as much as possible in a trustworthy manner, it is not written here. The history up to King Ramapala was compiled by the Magadhan Pandit Sadavang Sangpo, and I have seen a work of two thousand shlokas. I have also heard from some Lama Pandits. Here, based on that work, there is also a work called Buddhapurana blessed by the royal Pandit Wangpo, which contains the complete story up to the fourth Sena king, and it appears to be a poem of one thousand two hundred shlokas. There is also the story of the lineage of teachers written by the Brahmin Pandit Bhataghati, which is about the same length as the previous work, and it has also been well supplemented from these two works. The arrangement of their respective times, except for minor details, is mostly unanimous among the three. Moreover, those also seem to focus mainly on how the Dharma appeared in the kingdoms under the sun, but the detailed records of how Kashmir, Ujjain, Tokhar, the South, Koki, and the various islands changed, because I have not seen or heard of them, I cannot write. For the scattered stories that appeared later, although there was no writing before, the trust that arises from the oral tradition

Being capable, it also records the contents that appear in the Garland of Stories. Thus, this treasure of wonderful stories, strung together with easy-to-understand words, is woven into a harmonious and peaceful necklace for the purpose of adorning the necks of the intelligent. For those who have contributed to the cause of the Buddha's teachings, may the faith in the sublime ones greatly increase, and for the various treatises, may one be able to distinguish whether they have reliable sources or not, this is the purpose of this book. May faith in the sacred Dharma also increase, and for the learned and accomplished holders of the teachings, whatever good deeds they perform to spread the Dharma, understanding these clearly is also the purpose of this book. Having faith in the path and the individual, and then entering into the corresponding Dharma, ultimately attaining perfect Buddhahood, this is said to be the specific thing to do. May all sentient beings, through this merit, enter into virtuous conduct, and ultimately become unsurpassed perfect Buddhas, may they be adorned with all qualities. In order to clearly show how the source of auspiciousness, the precious sacred Dharma, flourished in the holy land of India, this work called "The Wish-Fulfilling Jewel" was written at the request of some who needed it, and also seeing that it would benefit others, by Jamyang Khyentse Wangpo Tāranātha at the age of thirty-four, in the Earth-Male-Monkey year on the day of Mercury, in Drakto Chökyi Podrang May the precious teachings flourish, develop, and abide long in all directions! Like the Prajñāpāramitā, the mother of all Buddhas, the source of the four noble ones, the way in which the sacred Dharma arose in the holy land of India, like the pure words of the oral transmission of the saints and scholars, compiled as if seen directly by the holy wisdom. Although those who desire liberation should listen with one mind, but like a treasure buried underground, one cannot discover it by merely seeing a sample of the book. Manjushri Guru opened the door of wisdom and compassion, and like a Dharma donation, showered a new rain of wish-fulfilling nectar. This unparalleled root of benefit and happiness for all beings, in this great temple of all Buddhas, I pray that you, the protector, will remain here for hundreds of kalpas, and look upon me and other sentient beings with compassion. In order to prevent the decline of the Buddha's teachings and further develop them, the incarnation of the Second Buddha, the Omniscient Jonangpa, Jetsun Yönten Sangpo, in the year 1995, made the complete works of the Omniscient Tāranātha into pure wooden blocks of Dzamthang (འཛམ་ཐང་).
