It is necessary to expel those actions that waste the offerings of faith. After discussing, they decided that if they took turns reciting scriptures, this place would become impoverished. They did so, and eventually even Shantideva was asked to recite scriptures. At first, Shantideva did not agree, but after repeated requests, he said, "Then I will recite the Bodhisattvacaryāvatāra." Some people became suspicious, and most gathered to belittle him. There, Shantideva sat on a lion throne and asked, "Shall I recite something that has been recited before, or something that has not?" Everyone, in order to test him, said, "Recite something that has not been recited before!" Then he began to recite the Bodhisattvacaryāvatāra, and from the phrase, "When things and non-things, do not remain before the mind," he flew into the sky and departed. Although his body disappeared, the appearance of his voice did not cease, and in this way, he completely recited the Bodhisattvacaryāvatāra. At that time, those panditas who had attained dharani remembered it, and among them, the Kashmiris recorded more than a thousand verses, and the offering praises were composed by themselves. The easterners had only seven hundred verses, and they inserted the offering praises of the Mūlamadhyamakakārikā, but that was also incomplete. The people of the central region did not have offering praises and vows to compose treatises, but only as rejoicing praises, there were a thousand verses. Doubts arose about this. According to the previous history of Tibet, it is said that he lived in the auspicious city, but in reality, he went to Kalinga city, which belongs to Trilinga, and hearing that he lived there, three panditas went there and requested him to go to Nalanda, but he did not agree. They then asked, "Then what do you mean by saying that you will look at the Śikṣāsamuccaya and the Sūtrasamuccaya? And where are these three books?" He replied, "The Śikṣāsamuccaya is on the bark of a tree in the window of the inner room, there is a book written in the small letters of a pandita, go and take it. Take the Bodhisattvacaryāvatāra as it is held by the people of the central region." There, there was also a forest monastery, and he lived together with about five hundred monks. There were many animals in that forest, and those animals that came to the monastery, because of the power of miracles, (Shantideva) ate their meat. The monks saw the animals entering the teacher's monastery, but did not see them coming out, and the group of animals.
