After praying to Tara, he arrived at an ocean island at the confluence of the Ganges and the sea. It is said that the island was an emanation of the Holy Tara, named Chandra-dvīpa, which got its name from Chandra Gomi himself residing there. It still exists today, and it is said that it can accommodate about seven thousand villages. The teacher (Chandra Gomi) resided on that island and built statues of Holy Avalokiteśvara and Tara out of stone. Initially, the fishermen heard the news. Then, gradually, other people came and formed a city. Due to the encouragement of Holy Avalokiteśvara, Gomi became a lay practitioner, and his name was Chandra. From then on, he was known as Chandra Gomi. After that, he was taken by merchants to the island of Simhala (Sri Lanka). That place was prone to Naga diseases, so he built a temple of Holy Simhanāda there, thus pacifying the Naga diseases. In that place, he also spread countless fields of knowledge such as crafts, medicine, etc., and was particularly beneficial to the foolish people of the island. He also explained the Mahayana Dharma as appropriate. He obtained wealth from the local guardian spirit Yaksha and established many Dharma foundations. Again, he came to the southern region of Jambudvipa. In the temple of the Brahmin Mchog Sred, he saw a device for the Nagas to listen to sounds, and also a commentary on Pāṇini written by the Naga Śeṣa. He criticized that a commentary should be concise, rich in meaning, non-repetitive, and complete, but the Nagas are very foolish, and the commentary is lengthy, poor in meaning, repetitive, and incomplete. Therefore, he composed the Cāndra-vyākaraṇa with its branches as an explanation of the meaning of Pāṇini. In that text, he said "concise, clear, extensive, complete," which was also a satire on the Nagas. After that, he came to the source of knowledge, glorious Nālandā. At Nālandā, the paṇḍitas who could withstand debate with heretics preached the Dharma outside the iron fence, and those who could not withstand it preached inside. At that time, Candrakīrti, who had become the abbot, was preaching outside, and Chandra Gomi stood and sat there. Those who wanted to debate did so, otherwise they either did not listen or listened respectfully. There, Candrakīrti wondered if he was a debating opponent and asked, "Where do you come from?" He replied, "From the South." Candrakīrti asked, "What Dharma do you know?"

Having mastered the grammar of Pāṇini, the hymn "Hundred and Fifty Verses of Praise," and the "Nomenclature of Mañjuśrī," he humbly said, "I only know these three texts." In reality, he had acknowledged that he understood all of grammar, the sutras, and the mantras. People suspected he was Candragomin and asked him. He replied, "That's what the world says." They then said, "It's not proper for such a great scholar to arrive so suddenly. The sangha should hold a welcoming ceremony. Please stay in the city for a while." Candragomin said, "I am just a layman. How can the sangha hold a welcoming ceremony for me?" Candrakīrti said, "There is a way. We will invite an image of the noble Mañjuśrī, and you can wave a fly whisk for him. The sangha will then be welcoming Mañjuśrī." Later, following this method, in three chariots, the image of the noble Mañjuśrī was placed in the middle chariot, Candrakīrti waved a fly whisk on the right, Candragomin waved a fly whisk on the left, the sangha welcomed from the front, and countless people came to watch. The teacher Candragomin felt that the image was the real Mañjuśrī, and when he praised, "Mañjuśrī is praised by billions of Buddhas of the ten directions..." the image of Mañjuśrī turned its face back to listen to his praise. People saw the image's face turn and said, "This image can move like this!" Therefore, the image was known as the "Noble Turning-Faced Image." At that time, Candragomin's faith increased even more. Because the oxen pulling the chariot could not move it, Candrakīrti went ahead. Candragomin thought that Candrakīrti was too arrogant and thought, "I will debate with him." Candrakīrti thought the same. Thus, Candragomin, based on the tradition of Asaṅga, took the side of the Mind-Only school; Candrakīrti, based on Nāgārjuna's texts and the explanations of Buddhapālita and others, took the side of the Emptiness of Inherent Existence school. They debated and argued for seven years. To watch the debate, many people gathered together regularly, and even the boys and girls of the village knew some of the main points of the debate. They sang, "Alas, the texts of the noble Nāgārjuna are medicine for some and poison for others; the texts of the invincible noble Asaṅga are nectar for all beings!" From then on, the debate...
