It is not in accordance with the conduct of the virtuous ones, and it is also said in the Adusaṅgha Sutra that one should not argue with the teacher. Since this is the case, how can it be appropriate to argue with the noble Asaṅga? It is well known that Asaṅga received teachings from Maitreya. Vasubandhu asked without knowing this, and Asaṅga concealed from his younger brother that he would ask a tutelary deity. Although these are all understandable, they are not the same. Therefore, the history of India records it as follows: Starting from the previous content, he asked for a method to purify sins. The noble one asked Maitreya and said, "You should extensively explain the Mahāyāna Dharma, write commentaries on many sutras, and recite the vidyā-mantra of Uṣṇīṣavijayā a hundred thousand times." After hearing this, Vasubandhu memorized all the Mahāyāna sutras after listening to them only once. He received the initiation of mantra from a mantra master, recited five hundred dhāraṇī sutras, and attained accomplishment by reciting the vidyā-mantra of the Lord of Secrets (Vajrapāṇi). He understood the true meaning and possessed special samādhi. At that time, he understood all the Buddha's teachings present in the human realm. Therefore, it is said that after the Teacher (Śākyamuni Buddha) passed into parinirvāṇa, there was no one as learned as the teacher Vasubandhu. Among them, from the three pitakas of the Śrāvakayāna, there are five hundred sutras, three hundred thousand ślokas, and the forty-nine sections of the Ārya Ratnakūṭa Sūtra are combined into one. The Avataṃsaka Sūtra and the Ratnakūṭa Sūtra are also counted as one each. The remaining Mahāyāna sutras, such as the Pañcaviṃśatisāhasrikā Prajñāpāramitā Sūtra, large and small, total five hundred, and five hundred dhāraṇī-mantras. All of these words and meanings were stored in his mind. He recited them once a year, entering a sesame oil pool and completing the recitation in fifteen days and nights. He also recited the Aṣṭasāhasrikā Prajñāpāramitā Sūtra every day, completing it in about one or two hours. When this teacher entered the Mahāyāna, about five hundred scholars, including those who held the three pitakas of the Śrāvakayāna, entered the Mahāyāna. After the noble Asaṅga passed away, he became the abbot of glorious Nālandā Monastery.
