Due to circumstances, it diminished, and now only a portion remains. Of the 'Arya Ratnakuta Sutra,' only forty-nine sections remain out of a thousand. Similarly, of the 'Avatamsaka Sutra,' only thirty-eight chapters remain out of a thousand. Of the 'Mahasamghata Sutra,' only nine sections remain out of a thousand. The 'Lankavatara Sutra' is represented by the chapter on the Tathagatagarbha, and so on. This marks the third instance of the destruction and subsequent restoration of the sacred Dharma, the twentieth section. Thereafter, during the later years of King Buddharakshita's reign, in the eastern region of Odivisha, on a mountain near the great ocean, a temple named 'Jewel Mountain Peak' was constructed. Three copies of the Tripitaka, encompassing both the Mahayana and Hinayana teachings, were created and enshrined there. Eight great monastic centers were established, and five hundred monks were assembled. Near Bhamgala, on a mountain by the sea, a temple named 'God Mountain,' similar to 'Jewel Mountain,' was built. The temple was constructed by a minister, the scriptures by the Brahmin Shamku, and all the offerings were prepared by the Brahmin Purbu. The monastic foundation and the livelihood of the Sangha were provided by the king's consort. The Brahmin Shamku resided in a place called Pundavardhana, between Magadha and Bhamgala, with seven paternal cousins and great wealth. He practiced the mantra of the Great Lord, attempting to subdue a local Naga, but he failed. The Brahmin family, including the seven paternal cousins, were all bitten by venomous snakes and died. Shamku was the son of that Brahmin and was cherished by his relatives. Many mongooses were kept in the basement of the house, and creatures called Shela, which kill snakes, were kept outside the house. Many peacocks were kept on the roof to guard against snakes. He diligently sought mantras and substances to subdue the Nagas. Then, one time, the Nagas came and made a loud 'phut' sound, causing the peacocks to scatter and flee. A great whirlwind blew, causing the creatures called Shela to enter their holes. At that moment, a small snake climbed up the corner of the house, entered the room, and bit Shamku, causing him to die. When the body was taken out, his wife

I took him away and put him in a small boat made from a single tree, and carried him down the Ganges River. I took him away like this and asked, "Who can revive this person?" Three days passed like this, and for three days the shepherds mocked him. Once, a woman came and recited a mantra over the water, and then washed the body with this water, and the body was revived. After that, when he returned to his homeland, people asked him what had happened. He said, "The Brahmin Shangku has been dead for seven days, and his family is offering the household items to the Brahmins." When he returned home, he thought it might be an illusion, so he didn't believe it at first. Later he believed it and was very happy. After that, he only searched for the mantra to subdue the Nagas. Once, a woman who was working in the field recited a mantra, and a snake came from nowhere and bit the little son of that woman on the foot, and the child seemed to die for a moment. When the farm work was finished, a snake came and just lightly touched the little son's foot, and he came back to life again. He realized that it was a Dakini, so he prostrated to her and asked her to teach him the mantra. The Dakini said, "You are not a vessel for the mantra, and it is also difficult to find the samaya substance." She refused him, but he insisted on requesting, and finally she agreed. There, eight handfuls of milk porridge boiled with the milk of a pure black female dog were needed as the samaya substance, he found these, and requested to be taught the mantra. The Dakini recited many mantras and made Shangku drink it. Six handfuls of milk porridge filled him up, and he couldn't drink any more. The Dakini threatened, "If you don't drink these, you will be killed by the snake in the first place, and then you will kill many people." She forced him to drink it, and he drank another handful. No matter what, he couldn't drink the remaining handful. Then, the Dakini said, "Didn't I say from the beginning that you are not a vessel? Now you can subdue the seven Naga clans and can control them as you wish, but you are not the type for wealth increase. One day, you will die because you are caught by the snake wealth increase type." After that, that Brahmin became very powerful and possessed great magical powers, he drove the Nagas to serve him, and he could do anything, whether beneficial or harmful, without any hindrance. In this way, he associated with many Brahmins every day...
