Furthermore, it is said that he composed a hundred hymns praising the Buddha. Among all the hymns, the most excellent is the "One Hundred and Fifty Hymns." When Makhol (transliteration) entered the Buddhist teachings, there were exceedingly many heretics and Brahmins who became monks in the monasteries of the four directions. Even the most excellent of the Brahmins, the extremely wealthy Thubka Nakpo (transliteration), abandoned his own tenets like discarding saliva ashes. If one enters the Buddhist teachings, then the Buddha's Dharma must be very wondrous. Therefore, in the glorious Nālandā alone, more than a thousand Brahmins became monks, and the heretics who became monks were also just as numerous. That teacher, because he possessed great merit, even when he went for alms in the city every day, he received immeasurable amounts of food. He effortlessly supported two hundred and fifty meditators and two hundred and fifty reciters, a total of five hundred monks. The hymns composed by this teacher are as blessed as the Buddha's words themselves, because the Victorious One himself prophesied that he would praise him. All the hymns composed by him spread throughout all lands, so that even singers and comedians would recite them. Therefore, all the people of the land naturally developed faith in the Buddha, and the hymns alone greatly benefited the flourishing of the teachings. In his later years, King Kaniṣka sent messengers to invite the teacher, but because the teacher was very old, he was unable to go. So he wrote a letter, which caused the king to turn to the Dharma. The teacher sent his own disciple, Yeshe Nyenpa (transliteration), to be the teacher who taught the Dharma to the king. He wanted to compose the ten Jataka tales, which had been passed down orally from teacher to teacher, combining them with the Ten Perfections Sutra and other scriptures. He had already completed thirty-four stories when he passed away. Some historical records say that if he saw the proximate cause of a Bodhisattva giving his body to a tigress, etc., he thought, 'I can also do that. Isn't that a difficult deed?' One day, when he saw a tigress with cubs, who was hungry...
