He went to Nalanda. There, he subdued the heretical allies, the sister Pandita, Nezo, and Tolekor, with a common bhikkhu's bowl, a cat, and jars of black oil. Because all directions were bound by vidyā-mantras and surrounded by rags and the like, they could not even enter the Nyingjé Gyü of the Great Lord. After a long debate, the teacher defeated them three times. They tried to escape through the sky by the power of vidyā-mantras, but the teacher bound and seized their mantras. Imprisoning them in a temple, when they read the scriptures, they saw the sutra that prophesied longevity. They regretted their previous improper actions towards the Dharma. Their faith in the Buddha greatly increased, they renounced, and soon became holders of the three baskets. After that, the teacher Āryadeva also stayed at Nalanda for a long time. Finally, he went to the south and did great deeds for sentient beings, entrusting the teachings of the heart essence to Rāhula Bhadra in a place called Ramganatha near Kanchi, and then passed away. Contemporary with the teacher Āryadeva, in the south there was a teacher named Longbu, whose real name was Tathāgatabhadra. He was invited by the nagas and went to the naga realm seven times. He expounded many Mahāyāna sutras and slightly clarified the Madhyamaka of Mind-Only. The "Praise to the Three Bodies," which is now translated into Tibetan, was also composed by this teacher. In particular, this teacher also composed a treatise called the "Praise of the Heart Essence." At that time, in most of the southern regions, such as Vidyānagara, even the boys and girls of the towns were singing the verses of the Tathāgatagarbha Sutra. He propagated the Dharma to such an extent, and then again served as the abbot of glorious Nalanda for a long time. This teacher was also a disciple of Nāgārjuna. Furthermore, in the land of Bengal in the east, there were two old Brahmins who had a son and were poor in possessions. The teacher Nāgārjuna gave them much gold, and they became even more devoted, the three of them

Ma-char became his student. This child served as the teacher's attendant and also attained the siddhi of the elixir. Later, he renounced and became proficient in the three pitakas, he was the teacher Nāgabodhi. He also served the teacher until the teacher Nāgārjuna resided. When the teacher passed away, he stayed in a deep cave on one side of the Glorious Mountain and meditated single-pointedly. After twelve years, he attained the supreme siddhi of Mahāmudrā. His lifespan was equal to the sun and moon, and he remained in that place. There are two names for him: Nāgabodhi (Sanskrit: Nāgabodhi, Devanagari: नागबोधि, Romanized: Nāgabodhi, literal meaning: Dragon Enlightenment) and Nāgabuddhi (Sanskrit: Nāgabuddhi, Devanagari: नागबुद्धि, Romanized: Nāgabuddhi, literal meaning: Dragon Intellect). Again, there appeared an accomplished one named Shingkhawa. Once, when the teacher Nāgārjuna was residing with about a thousand attendants on Mount Ushira in the north, there was a student who was extremely dull-witted. He could not even memorize a single verse in many days. The teacher jokingly said, "Meditate on having horns growing on your head." He meditated in that way, and because his focus was very sharp, the sign of tangible vision arose immediately, and his horns touched the cave where he was staying. Then, the teacher, knowing that his faculties were sharp, again had him meditate on the horns disappearing, and they disappeared. Then, the teacher showed him some special aspects of the completion stage and had him meditate. Before long, he attained the siddhi of Mahāmudrā. After that, the teacher and his retinue practiced the mercury elixir for six months. After it was accomplished, when pills were distributed to each student, he touched the pill to his head and threw it away as he pleased and left. When the teacher asked him the reason, he said, "I have no need for this. If the teacher himself desires such a thing, then prepare vessels filled with water." There, a thousand large vats were filled with water, as if to fill the forest. He poured a drop of his urine into each of those vessels, and all of it became the alchemical elixir, the gold-transforming essence. Teacher Nāgārjuna hid all of these as treasure in a difficult-to-access rock cave on one side of that mountain, and made aspirations to benefit future sentient beings. That dull-witted one who attained accomplishment was called Shingkhapa, the horned one.
