Since their wisdom could not contain it, they slandered, saying that the Mahayana was not the teaching of the Buddha. Those Mahayana practitioners were all Yogacara-Cittamatra followers. They had previously renounced in each of the eighteen schools, so they mostly lived together with those schools, and even if there were only a few Mahayana practitioners among thousands of Shravakas, the Shravakas could not suppress them. At that time, in Magadha, there appeared two Brahmin brothers, the high priest Accomplished Lord and the Joyful Giver. Their family deity was the Great Lord, and they were both well-versed in all the tenets of both internal and external paths. However, the high priest remained doubtful, thinking that the Great Lord was also good. The Joyful Giver only had faith in the Buddha, and at the urging of his mother, he accomplished swift feet and went to Mount Kailash, the king of mountains. In the place of the Great Lord, he saw white herds of cattle and the goddess Uma picking flowers, and so on. Finally, he saw the Great Lord himself sitting on a lion throne and teaching the Dharma. The Lord of Hosts took the two of them into his hands and placed them before the Great Lord. Soon, five hundred Arhats flew from the Lake of Mind, and the Great Lord prostrated to them, washed their feet, offered umbrellas, and listened to the Dharma. There, he understood that the Buddhist Dharma was good, but when he asked, the Great Lord said that liberation is only found on the path of the Buddha, and not on any other path. The two of them were overjoyed and returned to their own country. They abandoned the attire of Brahmins and took the vows of a virtuous monk. They expertly studied the teachings of all vehicles, and in order to distinguish the good and bad qualities of Buddhists and non-Buddhists, the high priest composed the "Praise of the Exalted Distinction," and the Joyful Giver composed the "Praise of the One Who Excels the Gods." They proclaimed these in all the marketplaces and royal palaces, so that most of the people in the country were able to sing these praises. The high priest and his brother provided food for five hundred Shravaka monks in Bodh Gaya, and they made offerings to five hundred Mahayana practitioners in Nalanda. Nalanda was formerly the place of the venerable Shariputra.

It is also the place where he was born, and ultimately Shariputra and his entourage of eighty thousand Arhats also passed away into nirvana at this place. In the meantime, the Brahmin village became deserted. King Ashoka extensively worshipped the stupa of the noble Shariputra and built a great Buddhist temple. Later, five hundred upright Mahayana teachers deliberated and decided that if the Mahayana Dharma were taught at the site of the noble Shariputra, then for the Mahayana practitioners, the Dharma would become very prosperous. If it were taught at the site of Maudgalyayana, it would only have some influence, but it would not necessarily cause the Dharma to flourish. Having seen these signs, the Brahmin teacher brothers built eight temples and placed all the Mahayana scriptures there. Thus, the Nalanda Monastery was initially founded by Ashoka, the five hundred teachers and high priest brothers made the four dharmas flourish, Rāhula made it vast, and Nagarjuna made it extremely prosperous. The story of the time when the Mahayana Dharma began to flourish greatly is the thirteenth. After that, a king named Chandanapala appeared, ruling Jambudvipa. It is said that this king generally lived for two hundred and fifty years and ruled the country for about one hundred and twenty years. He especially worshipped temples and the Sangha, but other than that, there is no record of him making any other contributions to Buddhism. At that time, a Brahmin named Indra Dhruva, a friend of the king, attained the state of Indra through practice. He inquired about the definite positions of sounds, and what he said was written down and became known as the "Indra Grammar." It contains twenty-five thousand shlokas and is called the grammar taught by the gods. Around the time when that king ascended the throne, the great Brahmin teacher Rāhula came to Nalanda. He received full ordination from a monk named Black Robe and listened to the Shravaka Pitaka. Some say that he received full ordination from a monk named Rāhula Light, whose preceptor was the Black Robe monk. But this Black Robe monk is not the one in the lineage. The teacher is non-conceptual.
