The twelfth chapter. After the Third Council, around the time when King Kanishka also passed away, in a northern region called Asmaparanta, near the western Tokharistan of Kashmir, there arose a householder named Jati, who was endowed with abundant wealth. He made offerings to all the stupas in the north. From the western Maru region, he invited the Sarvastivadin monk Yikshe, and from Tokharistan, the monk Yangdro. He made offerings to three hundred thousand monks for twelve years, and finally, he made aspirations for unsurpassed enlightenment. As a sign of accomplishment, the flowers offered did not wither for a year, the butter lamps remained lit for that long, and sandalwood powder and scattered flowers remained in the sky. Earthquakes and musical sounds occurred. In the prosperous palace, the son of King Kanishka made offerings to one hundred arhats and other noble beings, and also held a five-year festival for tens of thousands of monks. In the eastern city of Flowers, there arose a Brahmin named Bidu. He constructed countless volumes of the Tripitaka and gave them as alms to the monks. Each of the three Pitakas contained one hundred thousand shlokas, and he constructed thousands of such sets. Each of these was also provided with countless offerings. In the city of Pataliputra, there arose the Arhat Timisra, the noble Ashvagupta, who was a meditator on the eight liberations. By his teaching of the Dharma, there arose arhats such as the noble Gayanayas, and many who saw the truth. In the west, there arose a king named Laksha Ashva, who also did much for the Buddha's teachings. In the southwestern region of Saurashtra, there was a Brahmin named Rigdana. At that time, he heard that the great elder Arhat Nanda, who was born in the Anga region, was a holder of the Mahayana Dharma, and he invited him in order to hear the Mahayana. At that time, countless virtuous friends who taught the Mahayana appeared simultaneously in various regions, and all of them were the noble Avalokiteshvara and...

They listened to the Dharma from various sources such as the Lord of Secrets, Manjushri, and Maitreya, and all of them attained the samadhi of the Dharma lineage. There were about five hundred Dharma preachers, including the great monks Abitarka, Vigataragadwaja, Dibyagaragupta, Rahulamitra, Jnanatala, and the great lay practitioner Sanghatala. The Holy Jewel Heap Sutra has one hundred thousand categories of Dharma and contains one thousand assemblies. The Holy Avatamsaka Sutra has one hundred thousand categories of Dharma and one thousand chapters. The Holy Lankavatara Sutra has twenty-five thousand verses. The Dense Ornament Sutra has twelve thousand verses. The Correct Dharma Collection Sutra has twelve thousand verses, and so on. Some of the volumes of these Sutra sections came from various places such as gods, nagas, gandharvas, and rakshasas, mostly from the land of the nagas. Most of those teachers were invited by that Brahmin. When King Laksha Ashva heard this news, he developed great faith and wanted to invite those five hundred Dharma preachers, so he asked his ministers, "How many Dharma preachers are there?" "Five hundred." "How many listeners are there?" "Five hundred." The king thought, "There are many Dharma preachers, but few disciples." So he built five hundred temples on the top of a mountain called Abu, and invited one Dharma preacher to each temple, providing them with all necessities. Five hundred of the king's own retinue, who were faithful and intelligent, were ordained and allowed to listen to the Mahayana Dharma. Then the king wanted to write scriptures, so he asked, "How much is the Mahayana Pitaka?" "In general, it cannot be measured, but there are currently one hundred thousand volumes." The king said, "Although there are many, they must be written." So he wrote them all and offered them to the monks. Later, at the end of time, these scriptures were brought to the glorious Nalanda Monastery. There, the three thousand five hundred monks who practiced the Mahayana Dharma all held countless Sutras, had unobstructed wisdom, and had attained patience. They all slightly showed the play of miracles and clairvoyance to the people. Therefore, when the fame of the Mahayana spread in all directions, the Shravakas
