was the beginning. The story of the time of King Padma Chenpo, this is the eleventh (story). After that, in the land of Kashmir, there arose a king named Singge. He renounced and was named Legtong, attained the Arhat fruit, and taught the Dharma in Kashmir. King Kanishka of the land of Jalandhara heard of this, and with great faith, went to northern Kashmir and listened to the Dharma from Arya Singge Legtong, and he also made extensive offerings to all the stupas in the north. He also established many festivals for the Sangha in the four directions. At that time, a Bhikshu named Yangdag Gyalwa Chen, who was renowned as an Arhat, taught much Dharma. Because he had great power, he took many possessions from Brahmins and householders, and had two hundred thousand Sangha debate the Dharma. At that time, the eighteen schools had already been established separately, and they remained because there was not much dispute among them. In the land of Kashmir, there was a Brahmin named Sutra who possessed unimaginable wealth. He always offered to the Sarvastivadin monks Chokyong and his retinue, and to the founder of the Sautrantika school, the great Kashmiri monk Neten and his five thousand monks, and especially propagated the three Pitakas. Among them are the strings of scriptural examples, and the examples of holding the Pitakas, etc., are the teachings of the Sautrantikas. At that time, from the east came an Arhat named Paba Zillok, who had reached the peak of extensive hearing. From some of the Theravada Bhikshus who had heard much, he recited the "Golden Garland Jataka," which is the sutra that prophesied the dream of King Krikri, and other very rare sutras. King Kanishka heard of this, and it is said that the Kashmiris gathered all the Bhikshus in a temple called Snagyen Nak in the land of Kashmir and held the third council. But others think that it was held in the Kupana temple in Jalandhara, and most scholars think that the latter is correct. According to the Tibetans, it is said that five hundred Arhats, five hundred Bodhisattvas, and five hundred ordinary Pandit gathered together and compiled it. However, according to the Mahayana view, there is nothing wrong with it in meaning. However,

However, from that time onwards, the great Buddhist scholars were only referred to as "Great Venerables," and were not called by the name "Paṇḍita," so it is not appropriate to say "Five Hundred Paṇḍitas." Gos Zhonnu-dpal translated a fragment of a Chinese text from the continuation of the History of Transmission, which also says, "Vasumitra and other four hundred monks," which is good. However, it is not right to think that this Vasumitra is the great scholar Śe-yu of the Vaibhāṣika school. Furthermore, since these are done from the perspective of the Śrāvakayāna teachings, it would be better to do it in accordance with the history of the Śrāvakas themselves. It is said that five hundred Arhats and five thousand great monks who uphold the Vinaya gathered. But in reality, it is only to show the greatness of the teachings that it is said that there were five hundred Arhats. In reality, there were very few Arhats, and it was only by including those who had attained the fruits, up to and including Stream-enterers, that they barely reached five hundred. Before the appearance of the great god and Bhadra, there were very many who attained the fruits every day. But since these two disturbed the teachings and caused disputes, the monks no longer devoted themselves to yoga, but only thought about the matters of dispute, so the number of those who attained the fruits also became very small. Therefore, at the time of the Third Council, there were very few Arhats. During the later years of King Valorous Army, the entire reigns of King Joyful and King Great Lotus, and the early years of King Kaniṣka, for the duration of these four kings, the Sangha was in dispute. The fierce dispute lasted for about sixty-three years. Including the various disputes that occurred before and after, it lasted for nearly a hundred years. After the dispute subsided, at the time of the Third Council, all eighteen schools were established as pure teachings, and the Vinaya was written down. The Sutras and Abhidharma that had not been written down before were also written down, and those that had been written down before were also proofread. At that time, various Mahāyāna scriptures appeared in the human realm. Some monks who had attained forbearance of the unborn Dharma taught a little, but because it was not widely propagated, it did not cause disputes among the Śrāvakas. At the time of the Third Council
